It seems like the shooting industry has come up with some creative ways to discreetly carry ammunition; mostly for rifle and concealed carry pistol platforms.
But what about shotgun ammunition? Not that we are walking the streets with a shotgun in hand, although that would be pretty badass.
What I’m talking about is a way to carry additional shotgun ammunition on my body that still allows me to be mobile, yet able to load quickly.
This could also work for the shotgun hunter as well who wants to carry spare shells, but not necessarily have a full loadout or shooting bag. If you’re a law enforcement officer looking for a better way to carry your shotgun ammunition in a discreet way, then this may be a viable option for you.
You’ll commonly see shotgun ammunition carried on a battle belt configuration whereas I am going for a more concealed configuration using my standard everyday belt. This allows me to carry spare shotgun ammunition concealed under an untucked shirt.
Before we go any further, I’m not talking about carrying a concealed shotgun around town under a jacket or something. This method is for those out hunting or camping that want to have their shotgun ammunition readily available without having to grab or carry some type of shooting bag.
This method of carrying shotgun ammo also allows you to be more mobile while securely retaining all your shotgun shells. Carrying less gear also allows you to move through the woods quieter and more stealth-like.
Having 12 Gauge Shotgun Ammo At The Ready
The system starts with my shotgun and how I keep extra shells on the gun itself. That is through the use of a 4 round velcro attached 12 gauge shotgun shell holder. The specific card I’m using is from Essential Tactical.
My personal shotgun is the H&R Tracker II Slug Gun. The single-shot shotgun is one of the easiest weapons to maintain in the field, and it’s remarkably durable given that it has very few moving parts. Yes, follow-up shots will be slower, but with practice, they can still be done pretty fast.
This is a very good modern-day equivalent to what Roger’s Rangers, Colonial Militia, and long hunters would have carried.
If they were that successful at unconventional warfare with a single-shot muzzleloader, then there is no reason we cannot be as effective with a single-shot shotgun. It’s great for hunting and will drop anything that walks in North America.
The Best Shotgun Shell Holder Setup For Discreet and Secure Carry
Having additional ammunition ready if you expend the 4 additional rounds on the gun is the next step. I’ve seen dudes just throw some spare shells in their pockets, which has its own set of issues. Others will use general-purpose pouches or dump pouches depending on the situation. Those are great overt solutions that may or may not work if you’re having to shoot and move.
By utilizing two more of the 4-round velcro attached shotgun shell holder cards and 2 Blue Force Gear belt-mounted M4 mag pouches, you now have an additional 8 rounds of ammunition for your shotgun on your waistline.
Reloading is easy. Once you’ve expended the card on the gun, simply rip it off and pull a fresh card from one of your M4 belt pouches, attach it to the gun, and you’re back in the fight.
This specific setup gives me a total of 12 shotgun shells at my immediate disposal.
For now, this is the way I’m going to carry my shotgun ammunitionwhen on a quick hunt or scout. This could change down the road as the mission dictates the equipment.
Remember to practice with your setup as well. The time to realize it’s not positioned correctly or flat out doesn’t work is not when your life is in imminent danger.
