The founder of Mossberg and Sons, Oscar Fredrick Mossberg was born in Sweden in 1866 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1886. He started his career working as a factory supervisor, managing revolver and shotgun production for Iver Johnson of Arms & Cycle Works in Massachusetts. As Mossberg got better at understanding the engineering of revolvers and shotguns, he started to work on his own designs. These designs led him to create his own makeshift factory out of the barn in his backyard with his 2 sons, Iver and Harold. By 1919, WWI had ended and they found themselves with an opportunity to own the prominent Marlin-Rockwell machinegun factory that went out of business due to demand drop. Once they bought this factory, they developed O.F. Mossberg & Sons and never looked back.
There are many reasons why the majority of gun manufacturers are doing so well today from the uneasy political climate to the Coronavirus Pandemic. However, Mossberg is exceeding all their sales goals and are on backorder for many of their weapons. The historical success of Mossberg has led Americans to buy weapons they trust and have experience with. Mossberg Shotguns, such as the Mossberg 500 and 590 Tactical are some of the best shotguns on the planet. According to the Virginia Department of Fish and Inland Fisheries, hunting licenses have increased by more than 50%. With Turkey hunting increasing, there is no better shotgun to learn to hunt than a Mossberg. The ambidextrous safety gives hunters more control and comfort because they never have to leave their hand from the gun to change the safety lever. The Twin Action Bars and the Dual Extractors are really what separates Mossberg from its competitors. These 2 features ensure your shotgun is reliable, dependable, and always on target.
Mossberg 590 Shockwave
The Mossberg 590 Shockwave was developed in conjunction with Shockwave Technologies and is heralded as the most unique shotgun ever made. The Raptor Grip looks like a handle used on some of the 1st Flintlock pistols during the age of the Pirates. Except for the Raptor Grip is built with a glass-filled polymer that is as close to being indestructible as possible. The Raptor Grip gives the shooter better ergonomics than the traditional shotgun stock and reduces the felt-recoil, which increases accuracy and control. You can purchase the Mossberg 590 Shockwave in either 12 GA or 20GA, depending on the purpose of the shotgun. For example, if you’re looking for a self-defense shotgun, I’d go with the 12 GA for the power.
Mossberg Shockwave| Upgrades
One of the main reasons Glock outsells its competition in the pistol market is the unending limit of accessories, from optics, sights, lights, lasers, or interchangeable backstraps. The Mossberg Shockwave has taken a page out of the Glock playbook and offers dozens of accessories to upgrade your shotgun in the most personal way possible. each person shoots differently, has different arm lengths and strength, has different personalities, and most importantly, has different purposes for owning the Shockwave. For me, I’d make sure I got the recoil-reduction wrist strap. Most of the models you get come with the forend strap for recoil-reduction and safety from the 15″ barrel. It will be up to you to decide if you want an optic, light, or laser on your shotgun, but at least you’ll know you have the chance to customize the Shockwave in thousands of different configurations.
Mossberg 590 Tactical
The Mossberg 590 Tactical is one of the most utilized shotguns in military and law enforcement agencies because of its customization and versatility. With a collapsable buttstock and an adjustable length of pull, the 590 Tactical can be used for either close-quarters-combat or home-defense. The 590 Tactical models are all built with a Picatinny Rail on top for mounting an optic or after-market night sights. Built with dual extractors to ensure proper feeding in dirty, dusty, or wet environments provides the reliability that every officer or soldier needs. The Twin Action Bars are specifically designed to prevent the pump-action from twisting up the metal ramps and preventing the shotgun from loading/unloading. The 590 Tactical is not meant for hunting, but Mossberg has you covered with the Mossberg 500 Hunting Shotgun.
Mossberg 500 Vs Mossberg 590
The Mossberg 500 was originally developed in 1960 and has been one of the most trusted and respected shotguns in our country since its inception. Our military has used the Mossberg 500 in every war since the Vietnam War. The 500 model is more versatile than the 590 tactical because it has applications in hunting, tactical situations, and the 500 FLEX model with a tool-less locking system incorporated. The Mossberg 500 Hunting shotgun is the shotgun I use for hunting Turkey and Waterfowl, but it can also be used for deer, bear, or coyotes. The 590 is specifically meant for person-to-person defense or military assault situations and has no real hunting applications. The 500 models are built with at least a 24″ barrel, whereas, the 590 models are built mostly with an 18.5″ barrel.
Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag
The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag is the most revolutionary shotgun on the planet by being the 1st pump shotgun chambered in a 3.5″ barrel designed for magnum shells. The Ulti-Mag barrel had to be overbored to accommodate the extra power and force of a magnum shell. The overbored barrels are great for hunting because it helps reduce the felt-recoil and has a more consistent pellet pattern. Since the barrel offers more room, the pellets don’t get bogged up in the barrel and deform pellets as they’re fired out of the shotgun. The Mossberg 835 is also very versatile with the ability to hunt big game, waterfowl, and turkey with absolute precision and effectiveness. The Marble Arms Bullseye rear sight provides a picture-perfect vision of the light-gathering front bead sight.
Mossberg Maverick 88
Maverick Arms is a gun manufacturer in Eagle Pass, Texas that produces the famed Mossberg maverick 88. The Maverick 88 is a pump shotgun that is produced in both Texas and Mexico. The reason the Maverick 88 is so special is the fact that it’s on average only $231.00 and works almost as well as the traditional Mossberg 500. Their ability to create quality shotguns for this price point is unheard of in our nation. This is the best opportunity to get a shotgun for those who can’t afford to drop $500 on a Mossberg 500 or 590. I think the Mossberg Maverick 88 is a great starter gun for those learning how to shoot, as well.
Mossberg 930
The Mossberg 930 is the auto-loading shotgun that has changed the competition shooting scene with the Pro Series Sporting. The 930 models come in a variety of capacities from 5 shells to 13 total. In my opinion, the Mossberg 930 Turkey shotgun is the best shotgun to ensure that no matter what, you’ll kill that turkey. The recoil-reduction technology incorporated into the 930 models allows you to put your follow-up shots on target within seconds. Whether you want to hunt, compete in a 3-Gun Competition, or defend your family, the Mossberg 930 is a tremendous choice for you at an affordable price.
Mossberg MC1SC
The MC1SC is a Mossberg pistol that has been built to replace your traditional concealed carry pistol. The MC1SC is only 1.3 lbs fully loaded and only 6.25″ long to provide you with the opportunity to conceal your pistol in every platform available. The grip is designed to handle, sweat, water, dirt, and sand with its rough-textured polymer composite. Mossberg created a new system to ensure your safety is paramount, called the Safe Takedown System. The premise behind the new safety system is to ensure that the trigger never has to be pulled in order to take apart the pistol to clean. The best feature is the flat trigger with about a 6lb trigger pull weight built with a tactile reset and reduced overtravel.
Mossberg Patriot
The Mossberg Patriot Synthetic rifle is the best rifle under $500 that I’ve ever experienced. I was able to shoot the Mossberg Patriot Synthetic is only $409 for a 7mm-08 Remington. For a hunting rifle, I always make sure that my rifle barrel is free-floating and never less than 22″ to ensure my accuracy is never compromised. The bolt is spirally fluted to increase the ergonomics and efficiency. The Patriot also included a box-magazine to decrease your loading and unloading time. The synthetic stock reduces the felt-recoil much more than the Walnut stock and provides the platform for precision shooting. I highly recommend the Mossberg Patriot for the thousands of Americans who are now getting into hunting to give this rifle a chance. Mossberg has a great warranty and even better customer service, so there should be no excuse to not go out and provide food for your family.
Mossberg MVP Series Rifle
With the Mossberg Patriot being the starter rifle with the most affordable price tag, the MVP is for serious shooters who want to hit targets out to 1,000 yards. The Mossberg MVP is built with an AR-15 Magazine for quick reloads and enhanced capacity. My favorite rifle is the MVP Long Range (LR) chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 22″ free-floating barrel. This model has an adjustable comb to ensure the best possible cheek placement and eye alignment. It’s built with the patented Lightning Bolt Action adjustable trigger to go as low as 3 lbs of trigger pull weight. All MVP models also have an adjustable length of pull for a complete level of customization for each individual shooter. These rifles will cost just over $1,000, but the quality and comfort you get will be hard to match for that price range.
