There are so many new cartridges out right now that even as a writer of guns and ammo, I don’t know all of them.
The .300 Winchester Magnum has been around since the early ’60s, but what about the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum (RUM)? After decades of great work with the .300 Win Mag, the RUM was introduced in 1999. Since its release, it really hasn’t caught a huge share of the market, but it’s popular with professional hunters and marksmen.
This blog is dedicated to the .300 Win Mag and the .300 RUM.
The .300 Win Mag is a belted, bottlenecked magnum cartridge that is designed to be a versatile cartridge for hunters, military snipers, competition shooters, and law enforcement organizations. If you’ve ever shot a .300 Win Mag, you know how much power and felt-recoil they have, but it’s still a very popular and reliable cartridge for hunters all over the world.
The diameter is the same as the .308 Winchester cartridge, but the base diameter is almost wider and the case is longer to accommodate the added pressure. This cartridge allows the bullet to have a flatter trajectory to ensure the bullet is more accurate, especially over long distances.

300 Remington Ultra Mag
The .300 Remington Ultra Magnum is designed to be one of the largest .30 caliber magnum cartridges on the market. The .300 Ultra Mag is an incredible hunting rifle that has been shown to outperform the ballistics of the .300 Winchester Magnum.
The Ultra Mag isn’t belted and the rim is rebated, like the .300 Win Mag. A rebated rim means that the rim’s diameter is smaller than the base of the case. This is designed to provide better feeding and extraction from the breach of the rifle. You’d be able to take any game in America with this rifle at longer ranges than both the .308 Win and .300 Win Mag. However, I’d never shoot a whitetail with a .300 Rem Ultra Mag.

Browning X-Bolt Hell’s Canyon
The Browning X-Bolt Hell’s Canyon Speed Long Range McMillan rifle features the Browning patented adjustable Feather Trigger finished with a gold plating. A detachable rotary 3-round magazine speeds up follow-up shots if you need to reload. The barrel and receiver are finished with very durable and expensive Cerakote burnt bronze. With a 1:8" twist rate, this rifle can feed and fire some of the heaviest bullets made. This is important because it allows the rifle to shoot at further distances. It helps significantly to have a 26" barrel instead of the standard 24" because it gives you more range and control over longer ranges.
If you’re still wondering why this rifle is $2,000, it’s because of the technology put into this rifle. The Pachmayr Decelerator is the base behind the Inflex Technology recoil pad. The recoil pad on the stock is designed to deflect the pressure from the blast down and away from the shoulder and cheek of the shooter. This is incredibly important when shooting such a powerful rifle because it helps provide faster follow-up shots.
Browning also incorporates the 60° bolt lift into all of their rifles as a staple in providing the shooter with a much easier-to-use and more ergonomic rifle. This is different than the standard 90° angle that most other rifles and is designed to prevent the bolt from getting in the way of the scope when pulled back. The Composite McMillan Game Scout stock is designed to offer a rigid shooting platform that reduces the felt recoil of the blast. The McMillan Game Scout stock is a perfect combination with the Inflex Technology recoil pad.

Savage Arms 110 Storm
The Savage Arms 110 Storm rifle is designed to be a lightweight hunting rifle with the extraordinary power of the .300 Win Mag. The best part about this rifle is the price tag of $700. The Savage Arms 110 Storm features the patented adjustable AccuTrigger and the AccuFit system to give the shooter a great deal of customization and versatility. The comb and heel are completely adjustable to reign in your most comfortable LOP setting for each shooter.
The AccuStock™ rail system is designed to accept almost any type of scope that’s on the market from Leopold and Vortex to Burris and Sig. The rail system secures the action 3-dimensionally along the entire length of the frame. This rifle is loaded with some of the features of more expensive guns. You’ll feel more recoil than some of the higher-end rifles like the Bergara Premier or the Hell’s Canyon, but it’s also more than $1,000 cheaper. For the price, I’d buy this gun without a 2nd thought.
