What is the Boater Safety Course?

The very 1st thing you need to take care of before applying for insurance is to complete a boater safety course, such as boat-ed. Taking your course from this website guarantees that you’re inside the regulations of water education, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. More than 82% of our nation has state requirements for this course before you can legally drive a boat on any water in your state. Even if you’re in ownership of the 7 states that don’t require this course, a certificate will lower your insurance rate in every state.

What Does USAA Boat Insurance Cover?

What Is Covered Under Boat Insurance?
HouseboatIf your houseboat is less than 32 ft in length and is less than $150,000, you’ll be covered under the cheaper coverage.
Jet SkiThe thing to consider with your Jet-Ski is it will cost more to insure if you have a turbo or racing sized motor. Just like sports cars, if there is a higher risk of accidents, the policy is going to cost more.
Wave RunnerWave Runners are some of the most fun you can have on a lake, but they are expensive to own and insure, especially if you use it a lot.
Pontoon BoatPontoon Boats are some of the cheapest insurance you can get because the boat can only go so fast. Generally speaking, it’s much harder to crash a pontoon boat than it is a Jet Ski.
Bass Fishing BoatInsure your bass or fishing boat for as low as $100 per year. If you have expensive fishing equipment, such as poles, crab traps, gear, and fishing tackle, Progressive lets you insure those items as well.
Paddle BoatPaddleboats have come a long way and can get very expensive for some of the best ones on the market. Just because it doesn’t have an engine doesn’t mean you don’t want to protect yourself.

Coverages From Progressive & USAA

For the most part, all coverages will be around the same for Standard boat policies as far as what they will pay for and won’t pay for. The most basic of all coverages are called liability insurance, which is designed to protect you financially if you hurt someone on accident, and it’s your fault. Progressive allows you some flexibility on what you decide to cover, but we’ve included a more comprehensive list below for your understanding.

Coverage From Progressive & USAA

Full Replacement Cost

If you carry comprehensive and collision coverage, Progressive will pay what it costs to return your watercraft to its pre-accident condition or better. This coverage allows for the appreciation rate to be considered when buying replacement parts. Progressive will pay what the part is worth today, nut what it was worth 5-10 years ago.

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability (BI/PD)

Bodily injury liability covers you if you’re in a boat accident and liable for injuring others. Liability boat insurance also pays to repair or replace any watercraft, object, or other property you damage while boating, plus legal expenses if you’re sued. This can be very tricky because Progressive will only pay for what your policy maxes out at. Any money you’d owe after that is on you.
Fuel SpillProgressive pays for fuel spills, no matter how the spill happened: sunken boat, leaking tank, or a mishap at the fueling station.
Wreckage RemovalIf your boat sinks and the authorities demand it be moved, it can be incredibly expensive to pay a salvage crew to remove the boat from the water. Progressive will pay this fee, but only if it’s required to be removed.
Roadside AssistanceThis coverage comes standard if you have trailer coverage on your policy—we’ll pay to tow your disabled vehicle to the nearest repair shop.
Water Sports CoverageWater sports coverage pays for any injuries or damages you caused by tubing, knee boarding, wakeboarding, wake surfing, or other similar activities. Parasailing, kite boarding, or other activities in which someone is pulled through the air won’t be covered.
Total Loss ReplacementIf your watercraft is a total loss, you could be out any depreciation for the time you owned the boat, unless you get the optional total loss package. If your boat is less than 5 model years, Progressive will buy you a new boat, regardless of the price difference in models.
On-Water TowingIf your boat is disabled or breaks down on the water, boat towing insurance pays for on-water towing, jump starts, soft un-groundings, and fuel delivery if your boat is disabled on the water. Just call our dispatch center, and we’ll arrange for and pay the tow operator directly. You pay nothing out of pocket for towing boat service.
Fishing EquipmentYou can get full replacement cost up to $10,000 for fishing equipment, such as poles, fish finders, tackle, and gear that is already on the boat, such as life jackets.
Carry-on ItemsYou can get up to $5,000 for personal property such as scuba gear, phones, or other items that you carry on board and are lost or stolen.
Mechanical BreakdownProgressive pays to repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper & lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a mechanical breakdown. Natural wear and tear of use are covered in most cases, as well.
Comprehensive & CollisionThese are two separate coverages. Comprehensive covers events out of your control, such as theft, vandalism, sunken boat, fires, heavy winds, hurricanes, and other weather-related damage. Collision covers damage from boating accidents, such as hitting a submerged object, dock, another boat, and even covers any injuries to pets on your boat, etc.

Uninsured/underinsured boater (UB/UIB)

If you’re hit by a boater with no insurance or not enough insurance, UB/UIB will pay for your injuries and damages up to your policy’s limits.
Medical BillsYou can pick a range of coverage limits to pay for you and your passengers’ medical bills if you’re in an accident or someone is hurt on your boat.
Trailer Trip-InterruptionPays your expenses if you break down at least 100 miles from home. We’ll reimburse you up to $500 to cover food, hotel, and other transportation costs. Costs only $10/year.

USAA Yacht Insurance

USAA Yacht Insurance is similar to the boat insurance, except Markel Specialty is the partner with USAA, and the price of yachts can be in the millions versus less than the average $27,000 for a nice boat. If your Yacht is worth more than $150,000 or is longer than 32 ft, you’ll need a special kind of insurance for such an expensive vehicle. Markel Specialty is one of the best insurance policies you could get and give great deals to USAA members.

USAA Yacht Personal Coverage
Pollution LiabilityBe protected if your boat leaks oil or gas into a lake, river, or ocean. It obviously depends on how much is discharged, but you’d receive help in paying for those environmental costs.
Uninsured boaterThere will always be people who operate vehicles illegally, but you don’t have to be held liable for damages if you get hit by an uninsured operator.
Medical BillsIf someone does hit you and they’re at fault, this policy will cover you from medical bills.
Jones ActThis legislation protects the crew who maintain the yacht from any medical bills from injuries while on the boat.
ProtectionIf you have guests on your yacht and you are the one at fault during an accident, this policy would cover the costs of guests suing you for injuries.
IndemnityThe removal of a wrecked yacht is an exuberant expense that nobody wants to take on by themselves. Just buy the full coverage plan, and this will cover any removal costs.

USAA Yacht Insurance Coverages

Yacht coverage is typically different than boat insurance because Yachts face a new and different level of danger than most boats will endure. For example, a Navigation system that is designed to traverse the oceans could cost well over $100,000 by itself. Add the fact that on the ocean and in docks, you have to worry about high wind damage from hurricanes, tropical storms, and storm surges. Markel will pay a portion of that cost with you on any damage sustained from a named storm.

USAA Yacht Coverages
Navigation toolsI’ve never been on a Yacht, but I’d imagine that they’d need navigation tools for any of our oceans. These expensive and essential tools will be covered under this policy.
Reimbursement of protective equipmentMarkel will pay for items that you have to buy to protect your yacht. For example, if you have to buy a storage slot before a major storm, Markel will help you pay those costs.
Catastrophic damage coverageIf your yacht suffers damage from fire, explosion, sinking, or collision, you’ll be covered for it.
Ice/Freeze damageIce can damage just about anything on a boat, especially if it’s accompanied by a storm. Nobody can predict what will happen with the weather, so cover yourself and get this coverage.
Zero deductible on most total loss claimsIf your boat sinks and you lose everything, at least they don’t add insult to injury by throwing in a deductible. Could potentially save you $5,000-$10,000.
No depreciation on most partial loss claimsAs newer models get released, your boat will depreciate more and more every year, but you don’t have to worry about that with this insurance policy. Markel matches the newest model if it’s within 5 model years.
Automatic tender coverageTender coverage is the cost for a small service boat needed for most larger yachts. This allows large yachts to avoid entering small channels or ports and cut down on transportation time.
Windstorm extra expenseSometimes you can’t avoid a storm, but this coverage will protect you from wind damage of any named storm.
Personal effects coveragePhones, laptops, cameras, tablets, jewelry, watches, etc. are all covered under this add-on policy
Emergency towingTowing can be very expensive, especially the further out from a port you are. If you’re in an emergency situation where you can’t get your yacht back, Markel will pay a portion of these costs.
Rental reimbursement coverageIf you need a rental yacht while yours in being fixed, they will cover those costs as long as your yacht is insured before the service.
Agreed value for total lossThis takes the emotion out of the claim by agreeing on the total loss of your yacht before you sign your contract. This keeps Markel honest and gives you piece of mind that you’ll get a certain amount if the worst happens.

How Do I Apply For Yacht Insurance?

The easiest way to do this would be clicking on the Markel & USAA website link or by calling them at 866-936-1879. Yacht insurance is also mandatory when registered in most of our states, so getting any discount based on your affiliation with your bank is a good idea. As with any account with USAA, the more services you have with USAA, the more you’ll receive benefits, such as lower interest rates than average. You’ll be asked for your USAA number, so have that out with your bank account information and social security number on hand.
