History of the Gerber Gator Folding Knife

The Gerber Gator folding knife is a popular pocket knife that has been in production since 1991. It is one of the most well-known and trusted folding knives in the market, renowned for its durability, reliability, and functionality. The Gerber Gator folding knife was developed by Gerber Legendary Blades, a company that has been in the business of producing knives and other outdoor gear since 1939.

The Gerber Gator folding knife was designed with the intention of creating a tool that is not only efficient but also easy to handle. Its unique handle design was inspired by the texture of an alligator’s skin, hence the name “Gator." The handle is made of glass-filled nylon, which provides a secure and comfortable grip, even in wet conditions. The blade is made of high-carbon stainless steel, which ensures that it remains sharp and corrosion-resistant even after prolonged use.

Over the years, Gerber has continued to innovate and improve the design of the Gator folding knife. The knife is now available in several variants, including different blade lengths, serrated edges, and even a gut hook for hunters. The Gerber Gator folding knife has become a staple tool for outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, military personnel, and even everyday people who need a reliable and versatile folding knife.

Overall, the Gerber Gator folding knife is a testament to Gerber’s commitment to producing high-quality and reliable tools for outdoor enthusiasts and professionals alike. Its long-standing history and reputation for excellence have made it a favorite among knife enthusiasts and continue to make it one of the most popular folding knives in the market today.

What steel is the Gerber Gator

The use of 420HC stainless steel is intended to create a tough knife that will hold an edge (contains ~0.5% Carbon) and is corrosion resistant (contains ~14% Chromium and ~0.6% Molybdenum).

During the forging process, those chemicals are combined to create hard, double carbide, bonds which help improve the abrasion and corrosion resistance of the steel.

My original Gerber Gator knife was made from 420 stainless steel and is still going strong.

Newer models are now also available in 154CM steel.
