EOTECH and Vudu are the same company (EOTECH is the owner) with the only real difference being EOTECH sell holographic optics and Vudu sell riflescopes. Vudu scopes are made in both the first focal plane (FFP) and the Second Focal Plane (SFP). the amount of care and precision Vudu® puts into each scope should give you enough confidence to buy a scope. This blog is dedicated to the EOTECH® Vudu rifle scopes and everything you need to know before you buy one.
What is the First Focal Plane?
The FFP is the most expensive of the two types of reticles because of the automatic adjustments the reticle makes. The FFP has the reticle placed in front of the magnification lens to automatically change the size of the reticle with the magnification. This is so important because you don’t have to worry about making adjustments, the holdover points are done for you. The FFP scopes get some complaints about the thickness of the reticle and how it’s too thick at closer ranges and too thick at further ranges. I tend to agree, but if you’re doing any long-range shooting, an FFP is a must over the SFP.
What is the Second Focal Plane?
The SFP is more affordable than FFP scopes, but it is a more restrictive scope for hunting or long-range shootings. The SFP reticle is placed behind the magnification lens, meaning the reticle never changes size with the magnification. This is why you’d never want an SFP scope hunting out in the Rockies or Cascades. If you’re a hunter on the east coast, you don’t need to take 600+ yard shots because the forests are too dense and there are not many places with that much open space. An SFP scope is perfect for hunters out east.
Vudu® Technology
Many of us already know the type of technology used in making the world-famous Vortex and Leupold riflescopes, but for whatever reason, people are less knowledgeable about Vudu® scopes. I believe the technology used in Vudu® scopes is on par if not better in some ways than the previously mentioned products. Below, you’ll find the technology used in every Vudu® riflescope that EOTECH® produces.
What is the Vudu® Scope Made of?
Vudu® uses a single piece of aircraft-grade aluminum that is shaped and molded into the shape of the frame. After its molded, it’s finished with a hard-anodized material to ensure the best possible durability. If you’re going to spend over a grand on a scope, you better make sure it’s going to last a while. As far as the construction goes, if it’s good enough for an airplane, it’s good enough for my rifle. I don’t recommend throwing your scope off a building, but the normal drops, scrapes, and bumps that go along with hunting will not wear down your scope.
The adjustment indicators and push-button illumination controls are as precisely etched into the metal as a laser can get. This ensures that the numbers and controls never fade and are as easy to track as possible in low light or stressful situations. All Vudu® scopes are water-resistant, fog-resistant, and shock-resistant. Make sure you understand that water-resistant doesn’t mean waterproof. Waterproof allows for more certainty that your scope won’t take on water if submerged in snow or water.
What is the Vudu® Turret System?
Every brand has a similar turret system because there are only so many ways to create a turret. However, every brand also makes its turret system a little different and unique. The Vudu® turret system is unique because it’s controlled by what they call the EZ-Clik™ tactical-style turrets. This system focuses on ensuring that any adjustments you need to make on the fly are done on the fly. The EZ-Clik™ turret system makes sure that not only can you turn the knobs quickly with very little pressure, but you can return to zero with almost zero effort.
What’s in a Vudu® Lens?
The frame the scope is always important because you don’t want to have to treat your rifle like some Faberge egg from the ancient world. Having an aircraft-grade aluminum frame ensures you can hunt and hike in the mountains without breaking it. However, the most important piece of the scope is the lens, by far. The biggest differences in prices between scopes often comes down to the technology put into the lens. Vudu® uses the top of the line in technology in their scopes.
They use a system of two pieces in their lens’ to provide protection and quality of vision. Starting with the XC™ high-density, low dispersion glass, Vudu® provides clarity in any lighting environment mother nature can throw at you. Secondly, Vudu® uses an Anti-reflective coated lens to make sure you don’t miss out during the golden hour due to the sun coming down into your scope.
What’s the Vudu® Warranty?
The Vudu® warranty is very similar to the EOTECH® warranty in many ways but is a little different in time covered. For example, the Vudu® scopes have a limited lifetime warranty, whereas, the EOTECH® holographic sights only have 10 years. Essentially, if the scope stops working because of some manufacturer defect or falls apart after a few years of moderate use, Vudu® will fix your scope or replace it with the same or newer model.
The one spot where they can get you is if the problem is based on the electronic components inside the scope, it’s only covered for 2 years from the time of purchase. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s something to consider because other companies may offer a better warranty on all components. I believe they have to keep it at 2 years because the ever-changing technology would make it difficult for them to keep up. In short, it’s just not feasible to have a lifetime warranty on electrical components for some companies.
