Best Laser Bore Sight for Every Gun

What if I told you that you can zero your rifle and any scope or attachment in less than 2 minutes every time?  Most would take out their phone or start looking at their watch and ask me to prove it. That’s what I love most about our audience and probably why I’ve enjoyed this job so much over the past few years.

I know my fellow veterans, LEOs, and avid gun lovers prefer to shoot straight both literally and figuratively. This blog is about the best laser bore sight for every gun in your collection. 

We have used many laser bore sighter tools in the past from the Bushnell Laser Boresight, the LaserLyte, and now the Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sighter.

I have now used the laser bore sight tool on my entire gun collection, including, my Mossberg 500, Stoeger M3500, Walther PPS M2, Glock 19, Colt AR-15, and both hunting rifles (30-06, 7mm Rem Mag). 

What are the 2 Ways to Zero Your Rifle Without Taking it Apart?

Generally, there are two types of bore sighter tools to choose from when sighting in your rifle, a collimator, and a laser bore sight. For many years the only way to sight in your rifle and scope would be to take everything apart and zero-based on shot placement and manual adjustments. Personally, I still use this method with my hunting rifles because it feels like it reinforces my confidence when I zero.

What is a Collimator Bore Sight?

I’m not the best at explaining scientific topics, so bear with me for a minute. Simply put, a collimator bore sight is a tool that you place in your barrel and it controls the light into a parallel beam that is projected all the way through the barrel.

The cool part is that you know when your barrel is zeroed properly when all the light from the collimator is projected outside the barrel in a grid format (crosshairs). If any of the beams are caught inside the barrel and not projected parallel to the collimator and rifle scope, you know your barrel and scope are going to be sighted properly.

In order to zero your scope and rifle, you need to make adjustments to the scope’s windage and elevation to align the reticle of the scope to the reticles of the collimator (crosshairs). Once they’re both in line with each other, your scope and rifle should be zeroed. 

Pros

• Very affordable
• Can be a universal tool 
• Compact

Cons

• The light is very difficult to see unless you’re zeroing at night or indoor range
• The axes of both the scope and collimator have to be precise or your shot will be off (this takes a lot of work)
• The light beam can rarely be seen more than a few feet past the barrel in most collimator bore sights. This makes it near impossible to zero at 100 yards without other tools or using the traditional way on top of the boresight tool
• Takes way more time to zero using a collimator versus a laser bore sight
• Even if the collimator works perfect, most people still use a laser pointer to shine through the barrel for added illumination

What is a Laser Bore Sight?

A laser bore sight is similar to a collimator in the fact they’re both made to help gun owners calibrate their rifles with their scopes and other optics. However, the laser bore sighter is different because they use a constant laser beam.

This laser beam is meant to be able to shoot out of the barrel anywhere from 25-100 yards in a clearly visible beam. Laser bore sighters are a much newer technology than collimators. The issue with most laser bore sights is that they use a red laser and therefore can’t be seen as far or as clear. It’s common knowledge that green lasers are easier for the human eye to see both day and night time.

Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sighter

There are a few laser bore sights that are common for most shooters, but none are even close to the Wheeler Laser Bore Sighter. The other laser bore sighters use a red laser, which is not going to give you more than 25-30 yards. 

It works by magnetically attaching to the bore of the barrel, perfectly in line with the barrel. Instead of having to worry about lining up multiple gridlines, you just adjust your scope based on the bright green laser. When you consider that your laser can be seen at 100 yards, both day and night, it offers the advantage of a more accurate zero.

How is the Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sighter the Best?

As you can see from the pros and cons, there is a lot to like about this tool. For starters, most companies (if not all ) use a red laser because it’s cheaper to produce and easier to replicate. Wheeler uses a strong green laser that I can see up to 100 yards from my target, even in daylight if a reflective bore sighting grid is used. 

Secondly, Wheeler uses a magnetic attachment point to the bore to allow easy, safe, and quick installation. With other companies, you have to make sure the laser bore sighter is lined up and oftentimes people complain of damaged barrels and inconsistent sightings. 

Finally, the Wheeler Professional Laser Bore Sight is as universal as it gets with an easy transition from a hunting rifle to a handgun to a shotgun with no additional equipment needed. Typically, I wouldn’t bother using this with a handgun, but it can be done and still provides excellent sighting capability.
