7mm Remington Magnum Hunting Rifles

When choosing a hunting rifle, it can be very difficult to determine the right caliber because you may want to hunt a variety of game animals. I believe that the best hunting calibers are .308 Winchester, 30-06 Remington, 7mm Remington Magnum, and 300 Winchester Magnum. Today’s blog is about my favorite all-around caliber of 7mm Rem Mag.

Many people might think the 7mm Rem Mag is overkill for smaller game such as whitetail and blacktail deer. However, with the new advancements in ballistic technology, the 7mm Rem Mag has become more acceptable for all mid-large game animals. My favorite 7mm Rem Mag rifles are from Bergara, Remington, Christensen Arms, and Ruger.

What is a 7mm Remington Magnum?

The 7mm Remington Magnum is a belted magnum that is built from the .375 H&H Magnum cartridge. A belted cartridge has a distinctive cut at the base of the cartridge that wraps around the base for better headspace control. As you can see below, the 7mm Rem Mag is a huge bullet at more than 3" in length.

The 7mm Rem Mag offers more velocity and penetration than the 30-06 and .308 Winchester, but also brings more felt recoil, as well. However, there are companies that are producing 7mm Rem Mag ammo that is designed to reduce the felt recoil and lower the velocity and damage to reduce the damage on small game.

Why You Should Hunt With a 7mm Remington Magnum?

I have a 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, and a .308 Hunting rifle that use depending on the location and animal that I’m hunting. All 3 of these calibers will take down any species of deer (whitetail, blacktail, mule).

I know for sure that a .308 will take down an elk and moose, but I prefer to use a 7mm Rem Mag. A .308 will work just fine if with good shot placement, but you won’t have as much accuracy over extended ranges as a 7mm Rem Mag.

I prefer to use a 7mm Rem Mag for any animal bigger than a deer, such as an elk, moose, bear, wild boar, or bison. You can obviously use a 7mm Rem Mag for deer, but you’re probably going to obliterate that front shoulder and not be able to salvage any meat from the shoulder.

However, if you’re worried about tracking your deer or are an inexperienced hunter, any deer hit with a 7mm Rem Mag will go down very quickly.

Federal Premium Sierra GameKing 7mm Rem. Mag. BTSP 165 Grain

As I mentioned above, there is ammo being made today that is more conducive to shooting medium-sized game and reducing the felt-recoil than the lighter 7mm Rem Mag options. Federal ammo is one of the most respected ammunition companies in the world and is trusted by hunters, marksmen, and law enforcement.

The Boat-Tail Soft Point allows for a wide expansion upon impact and mid-range penetration for maximum energy release. This bullet is meant to be used at longer ranges past 300 yards.

The Boat-Tail is designed to give this bullet incredible accuracy and a flatter trajectory. This helps the bullet fly through the air without being impacted as much by wind and elevation changes.

Hornady Outfitter 7mm Rem. Mag. GMX 150 Grain

The Hornady Outfitter GMX in 150 Grain is my go-to ammo for hunting mule deer, elk, and hog. The 7mm GMX is rated to bring down any animal weighing up to 1,000 lbs. Bull Moose can weigh just over 1,000 lbs so you really have to be careful and do your research before you go hunting.

The last thing you want to do is injure an animal with a bullet that’s not strong enough to bring it down humanely. I can tell you from experience, injuring an animal without killing it is the worst I’ve ever felt and something I hope to share with other hunters.

The GMX bullet is built from a mono-metal copper alloy and has been proven to shoot cleaner, foul less, and deliver consistent expansion and accuracy. The GMX outfitter is designed to retain 95% or more of its original weight with a devastating 1 1/2 times expansion of its original diameter.

The Outfitter ammo ensures you’re getting a corrosion-resistant nickel-plated case that is sealed to prevent moisture and ensure reliability in the backcountry. Outfitter ammo from Hornady will give you the best reliability and accuracy when you’re dealing with unpredictable weather conditions of the mountains.

As we all know, one minute can be 60 degrees and sunny, while the next can be 30 degrees and snowing. This ammo ensures you’ll have reliable ammo during any environmental condition you can face.

Bergara Premier Approach

The Bergara Premier Approach chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum is my all-around go-to hunting rifle. The only other rifle (out of the box) that compares to the accuracy and precision of the Bergara Premier is the Remington 700 5R. My Bergara Premier Approach is rated to shoot a sub MOA at 100 yards, but It’s closer to 1/4" MOA at 100.

The reason the gun is so accurate is due to the barrel manufacturing process. It’s a stainless steel barrel with a #5.5 taper. This barrel is specifically made using its proprietary honing process and is coated with a Graphite Black Cerakote.

The Premier action of the Approach rifle features a two-lug system and a separate floating bolt head to ensure contact with lug abutments. The lug abutments are designed to support the bolt head to ensure proper cycling and improve the durability of the bolt carrier group.

The bolt head, the non-rotating gas shield, the bolt handle, and the bolt shroud are fully Nitrided, as well as their self-lubricating properties. These features ensure the rifle is durable and always reliable when you need it most.
Crimson Trace Rifle Scopes
The TriggerTech Frictionless Release Technology is featured in most Bergara rifles and is the best non-custom trigger ever built, in my opinion. The trigger breaks like glass and has no creep at all. You can also adjust the trigger pull weight to as low as about 2.5 lbs of pressure. The 7mm Rem Mag model allows for 3 rounds in the hinged floor plate and 1 in the chamber.

Christensen Arms Burnt Bronze Ridgeline 7mm Rem Mag

Christensen Arms is an American rifle manufacturer that produces some of the best custom match-grade rifles anywhere in the world. It features a 416R Stainless Steel barrel that is wrapped with Aero grade carbon fiber.

This carbon fiber wrap is similar to what’s used on aircraft wings to ensure maximum durability and reliability in any environmental condition you could face while hunting. The rifle is compatible with any base compatible with a Remington 700. I’ve mentioned the TriggerTech trigger in the Bergara Premier rifle and the Christensen Ridgeline is built with the exact same trigger.

All Christensen rifles are precision machined to the most precise specifications possible with metal. It features an enlarged ejection port and receiver to ensure proper feeding and extraction every time.

The weight of the rifle is only 6.3 pounds due to some weight-saving measures, such as a spiral fluted bolt and using the more expensive carbon fiber to create the stock instead of a denser polymer composite.

RUGER M77 HAWKEYE

The Ruger M77 Hawkeye is an amazing rifle that is affordable, reliable, and durable enough to use as your all-around hunting rifle. The stock features rounded contours on the bottom of the stock and top of the pistol grip to improve ergonomics. the LC6™ trigger is not as smooth as the TriggerTech, but it’s pretty close.

It breaks incredibly smooth with very minimal creep. The most notable feature for me is the Non-rotating, Mauser-type controlled round feed extractor. It makes this rifle one of the most reliable rifles under $800 on the market today.

The barrel of the Ruger M77 Hawkeye features the same 5R rifling as one of the best rifles ever made, in the Remington 700 5R. This type of precision in the barrel ensures you’ll have a sub-MOA at 100 yards shot-after-shot.

Most all long-ranging hunting rifles feature a free-floating barrel that is cold-hammer forged. However, most of those rifles are more than $200 than the Ruger M77 Hawkeye.

Most Affordable 7mm Rem Mag Rifle: REMINGTON MODEL 783

The Remington Model 783 is an awesome starter hunting rifle that you can get brand new for less than $600. The 783 is made from either 100% Walnut or synthetic polymer composite. I prefer a synthetic stock every time because the felt-recoil is noticeably less than a wooden stock.

The CrossFire Trigger System features an adjustable trigger pull weight from 2.5-5lbs (3.5 lbs factory set). The same SuperCell Recoil Pad used in the Remington 700 is used in the Model 783. I can’t stress enough how great this rifle would be for beginner hunters or hunters who can’t afford the top-end rifles that are listed above.
