Mossberg 500 Vs. Mossberg 590| Whats the Difference?

Mossberg 500

The Mossberg 500 is one of the oldest (developed in 1960) and most trusted shotguns in our nation’s history. The Mossberg 500 has been used in every war we’ve been a part of since Vietnam. The Mossberg 500 is built to be as simple and easy to use as possible with very few parts and no extra tools for disassembly. The 500 series has sold at least 10 million shotguns in the last 50 years to our military, law enforcement agencies, and gun enthusiasts across the nation. The 500 series comes in the Tactical, Hunting, and FLEX models to offer a great shotgun at an affordable price.

Mossberg 500 Tri-Rail Tactical

The Mossberg Tri-Ril Tactical Shotgun is specifically designed for militaries and law enforcement officers (Leo) across the globe. The 500 Tactical is built with the same Tri-Rail forend system that’s in the 590 Tactical. This rail system allows for attachments to be placed on the left, right, and below the barrel of the shotgun for the ultimate customization capabilities. All Mossbergs are built with the top-mounted safety lever for ambidextrous use and this Tactical model is equipped with an adjustable stock for rapid length of pull customization. The biggest difference in the Mossberg 500 Tactical and the 590 tactical is the shell capacity is larger in the 590 models.

Why Should I Buy the Mossberg 500 Tactical?

The Mossberg 500 Tactical Shotgun is incredibly simple and built to be as practical, smooth, and dependable as possible. The dual extractors ensure each shell is extracted without any hiccups. The Twin action bars help with the reliability and longevity by ensuring the pump-action always racks back in smooth operation without binding or getting twisted, like some single action bar shotguns have done. This shotgun is perfect for LEO and soldiers in the military that needs to trust their lives on their equipment working at the moment they need it to. With the ability to attach lasers, lights, and optics on the Tri-Rail, you’ll be able to customize your shotgun in the best way for your specific purpose.  As a soldier, I always wanted my shotgun to remain light so the only attachment I used was a light on the right side of the rail to disorient anyone I was pointing the gun at.

Where Can I Buy the Mossberg 500 Tactical?

You can buy the Mossberg 500 from thousands of stores across the country, but you can’t buy directly from Mossberg. All Mossberg guns can be sold from their 3 major partners; Gearfire, Gallery of Guns, and The Shooting Store. You can also buy from Palmetto State Armory if you’re a military veteran, active-duty solider, or LEO for a great discount. Bass Pro Shops is always a great choice because they’re so well established and offer great deals.

Mossberg 500 Hunting

One of the biggest differences in the Mossberg 500 is the Hunting model that exemplifies how a hunting shotgun should be built. The Hunting models all have longer barrels in order to reach out further for either Turkeys, Deer, Pheasant, or Duck. With an adjustable fiber optic sight, choke, and stock, these hunting shotguns are the best on the market. Ranging from 6 lbs with a .410 shotgun to 7.5 lbs with a heavy-walled barrel, you can find the right model for you and your family with ease on the Mossberg website.

MOSSBERG 500 TURKEY 24″ 12GA MOSSY OAK BREAK-UP INFINITY

With almost a dozen models, I chose this 12 gauge Turkey shotgun because it’s the one that I hunt Turkeys in both the Fall and Spring. With a 3″ chamber, I prefer to use a full choke and shoot #6 birdshot. With the power of a 12 gauge, you never want to go lower than #4 birdshot because you’ll just blow the bird to pieces and get very little meat. I always recommend aiming for the neck of the bird and allow the shot to hit the neck, head, and top of the breastplate. This ensures a kill every time and you won’t lose much breast meat if you hit the bird correctly. With a 24″ barrel, I know this shotgun will accurately kill a Turkey from 35-40 yards, but the spread will be wider the further you shoot, so keep that in mind. The felt recoil in this shotgun is very low and I never have any problem with soreness or accuracy due to the power.

Specs:

Gauge: 12
Magazine Capacity: 6
Barrel Length: 24″ Vent Rib, Ported
Overall Length: 44 1/4″
Nominal Weight: 7.25 lbs.
Choke: XX-Full
Sights: Adjustable Fiber Optic
Chamber Size: 3″
Metal Finish: Mossy Oak Break-up Infinity
Stock: Synthetic

Why Should I Buy the Mossberg 500 Hunting?

The Mossberg 500 may be simple and easy to use, but don’t mistake it for being poorly made or cheap. I haven’t hunted deer with a shotgun, but I highly recommend using Mossberg for your hunting shotgun. With many models to choose from, there is no wrong answer to choose from. You can choose between 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and a 410 gauge Shotgun to fit your needs. The Turkey Hunting Shotgun that I use is relatively heavy, but I know that it’s going to be accurate, reliable, and dependable every time I raise up and shoot a turkey. The Mossy Oak skin on the shotgun makes it very difficult to see, which you’ll need for hunting turkeys.

Mossberg 500 FLEX (TLS)

The Mossberg 500 FLEX Tool-less System (TLS) is one of the most technologically advanced shotgun models in the world. The TLS system allows each shooter to customize their shotgun for their exact purpose. For example, if you’re a SWAT Officer and love the Tri-Rail, but want to change your stock to make it more mobile, you can simply unlock the stock and change it out with a shorter stock (with no tools!). You can change the forend, grip, stock, and sights for the ultimate customization capabilities to enhance your effectiveness on the battlefield. The breacher barrel allows LEO and soldiers to use the Shotgun to breach doors, windows, or on assailants that get too close.

Specs:

Gauge: 12ga
Chamber Size: 3″
Capacity: 6
Barrel: 18.5 Stand-off/Breacher
Sights: White Dot
Choke: Cylinder Bore
Overall Length: 41″
Barrel Finish: Matte Blue
Stock: Black Synthetic
Weight: 5.75lbs

Why Should I Buy the Mossberg 500 FLEX TLS?

The Mossberg FLEX 500 TLS is best for soldiers, LEO, and Americans that want to be able to customize every aspect of their shotgun with ease. The fact that you don’t need any extra tools is a big plus for any owner. The pistol grip and interchangeable forends offer each shooter the ability to find which set-up has better ergonomics. This shotgun is relatively more expensive when you consider the attachments, but I feel like it’s more than worth it considering that your life is at stake.

Mossberg 590

The Mossberg 590 Shotgun is the upgraded version of the Mossberg 500 that is specifically designed for LEO, Military, self-defense, and 3-Gun competitions. the 590 can be used for hunting, but it’s not recommended because the barrels are shorter and there is less adjustment in the choke. The Mossberg 590 is produced in models that boast unique features, such as the Raptors grip on the Mossberg Shockwave. If you’re looking for a tactical shotgun with a shorter barrel and higher ammo capacity, I highly recommend the Mossberg 590 Tactical. The 590 is built-in multiple styles and configurations, including the full-sized 590 A1 and the Mossberg 590M (Mag-fed) Shotgun.

MOSSBERG 590A1 BLACKWATER SERIES

The Mossberg 590A1 is built around a 14″ heavy-walled barrel that is Parkerized finished for the ultimate durability and passes MilSpec 3443E for military and LEO use. This shotgun is meant to be thrown around, dropped, hit, protect against extreme heat, and is ambidextrous. The 590A1 comes with a rugged front strap that prevents your hand from sliding in front of the barrel after the recoil of each shot. This shotgun has more felt recoil than the smaller 590 models, but it’s incredibly accurate at 40 yards like no other shotgun on the market. Shooting a slug from the 590A1 is a great option if you’re looking for the power of a shotgun, but need to reach distances up to 70 yards. The pump-action is incredibly smooth, the grip is rugged and sturdy, and the trigger is crisp and smooth for every pull.

Specs:

Gauge: 12ga
Chamber Size: 3″
Capacity: 9
Barrel: Heavy-Walled
Sights: Ghost Ring
Chokes: Cylinder Bore
Overall Length: 41″
Barrel Finish: Matte Blue
Stock: Black Synthetic
Weight: 7.25 lbs

Why Should I Buy the Mossberg 590A1?

The 590 A1 is built to pass the toughest testing for MilSpec standards in the world and maintain the Mossberg feel to the shotgun. The 590A1 is incredibly powerful, smooth, and dependable to give the utmost confidence going into battle. The Mossberg 590A1 is used by NATO forces across the globe to ensure freedom is accessible to everyone and protect its soldiers. I would buy this shotgun if I were thinking of a self-defense shotgun and wanted to reach longer ranges that the Shockwave and 590 Tactical can’t provide.

What’s The Difference Between Mossberg 500 & 590?

The biggest differences between the 2 shotguns revolve around the purposes for the shotgun in the first place. The 500 models are great for hunting deer, turkey, and waterfowl, while the other 500 models are great for self-defense. Generally, the 500 models have less shell capacity and longer barrels, but they’re all ambidextrous and smooth to shoot. Mossberg 590 models are built around the concept of military use with the certification of MilSpec 3443E and have no real hunting applications. The newest 590 model is the Shockwave that is meant to be the most mobile shotgun in the world that has just been made legal by the ATF. The 590M is a Mag-fed Shotgun that has no comparison in the 500 series and holds 11 shells that can be fired as quickly as you can rack a shell in and out.

Which Shotgun is Better; Mossberg 500 or Mossberg 590?

This question comes up a lot when discussing the 2 models, but it’s impossible to give a standard answer. For military and LEO use, I’d go with the 590M or 590 Tactical all day, but for hunting, I’d choose the 500. With multiple models designed specifically for hunting, the Mossberg 500 is and probably always will be my go-to for hunting turkey and duck. Both shotguns are built with twin action bars for smooth operation, ambidextrous safety levers, and dual extractors. For the most mobile shotgun on the market, the 590 Shockwave is going to be the best choice, but it’s also limited in range with a 14-15″ barrel. My recommendation is to decide what you want the shotgun for and figure out what feels the best for you. I think no matter what you decide, you’ll be happy with any Mossberg shotgun you buy.

How To Upgrade Your Mossberg Shockwave| The Ultimate guide to Shockwave Accessories

Mossberg Shockwave

The Mossberg 590 Shockwave is the revolutionary personal defense shotgun that is taking the country by storm. Mossberg was the 1st gun manufacturer to produce a shotgun with a 14″ barrel that is in accordance with the Gun Control Act in the ATF. The reason it’s legal for civilians to own is that Mossberg collaborated with Shockwave Industrustries with their patented Birds Eye Raptor pistol grip. One of the best parts about the Mossberg is the ability to customize the shotgun in dozens of different configurations to ensure the shotgun fits your personality and shooting style.

Specs:

Gauge 12
Capacity 5+1
Chamber 3″
Barrel Type Heavy-Walled
Barrel Length 14.375″
Sight/Base Bead
Choke Cylinder Bore
Barrel Finish Matte Blued
Stock Finish Raptor Grip / Corn Cob Forend w/ Strap
Weight 5.25
Length 26.37″

TRUGLO TRU-TEC Micro Red Dot Sight

TRUGLO TRU-TEC Micro Red Dot Sight is perfect for your Shockwave because of the wide-open window and bright red dot. This window provides a rapid target acquisition for the shooter and the red dot is bright with 10 distinct brightness settings. The sight picture also provides unlimited eye relief, meaning that you won’t have to close one eye and strain your eyes to see the red dot. If you’re anything like me and forget to turn your equipment off, the TRU-Tec has an idle auto-off system to ensure your battery lasts. It also comes with a Picatinny rail mount for easy installation and has a built-in lug and bolt for compatibility with any of your guns. The TRU-TEC is also water-resistant, shock-resistant, and fog-resistant to allow you to shoot in bad weather conditions without adjustments.

Monstrum Side Mounted 12 Gauge Shell Holder with Picatinny Rail Mount

A lot of accessories tend to seek because they’re flashy and have an incredible amount of technology put into them. The Monstrum side-mounted shell holder is none of those things, but it’s still one of the most necessary accessories for your shotgun. The rail mount is easily installed with the factory-drilled holes and requires no additional tools or gunsmithing skills. The shell holder accommodates up to 6 12 ga shells and is designed to be completely ambidextrous, so you can attach it to the left or right side of the shotgun. To make this shell holder even better, the Picatinny Rail on top can accommodate your optics, scopes, or any aftermarket sight. It might not be flashy or filled with tech, but its practical, easy to use, and will increase your chances of successfully defending yourself.

Crimson Trace Shotgun Lasersaddle

Crimson Trace always shows out with the coolest laser attachments on the market and the LS- 250 Lasersaddle is no different. The laser is easily attached to the receiver of the shotgun and has multiple activation pad points to turn on and off. This laser will fit perfectly on your shockwave and is built to be completely ambidextrous for maximum comfort for all shooters. The Crimson Trace laser Saddle is run on 2 CR2032 batteries and lasts up to 3 hours of continuous use before it starts to dim or turn off. I love this laser because it’s incredibly easy to use, it is customizable for wind and elevation, and it’s extremely practical with the touchpad points. You won’t have to take your hand off the grip or adjust your line of sight to use this laser.

CDM GEAR Fits Mossberg 590 Shockwave

Much like the Monstrum shell holder, the CDM rail mount is much more about making your shotgun better than making it look better. Using the CDM Gear tactical light rail mount will ensure your light will be securely mounted at the front of your shotgun for quick and easy access. You can remove the barrel and other accessories without having to touch the CDM mount. I love the fact that it sits perfectly next to the front sling so your off-hand can stay in the sling and turn on/off the light without adjusting your grip or taking your hand off the trigger. If you want a light attachment on your Shockwave, this mount is the best way to accomplish that goal.

Demonstrated Concepts Recoil Strap

I added the Demonstrated Recoil Strap to the list because the Raptor Grip can take some getting used to before you feel comfortable shooting with it. Since the Shockwave provides no stock with a shock absorber, this strap will take some of that felt recoil for you. It works with either right or left-handed shooters and gives you the confidence that your grip will never fall off the handle after it’s been shot. It might not look like much, but this strap will significantly reduce your felt recoil, give you added retention for improved confidence, and improve the ergonomics of the shotgun. I’ve included the video below to guide you on how to install the grip within 5-7 minutes with no added tools.

TRUGLO Fiber-Optic Universal Shotgun Front Sight

The TRUGLO Fiber-Optic is perfect for your Shockwave because it offers an affordable and easy way to improve your shooting in low light without splurging on a Night Vision Optic (NVG). The fiber optic is made to withstand just about anything you can throw at it and still not break. I love the idea that it’s a low-profile attachment that can make your shotgun more effective in low-light situations. I’d highly recommend using a fiber optic if you decide you don’t want to add a front optic on a Picatinny Rail or if you want an advantage in the dark over someone without night vision capabilities.

Shockwave Technologies Tactical Strap Kit

Not all Mossberg 590 Shockwaves will come with the forend strap to help prevent your hand from slipping in front of the barrel after a shot. Whether you get it used or a model without the strap, I recommend at least trying it out. The strap can be rugged and chafe your hand if you’re putting a lot of shells through, but I always wear a kevlar glove on my off hand to help keep my hand protected. The strap will also help with control, accuracy, and reduce the felt-recoil of your shotgun. If you use this front strap with the Demonstrated Concepts Recoil Strap, you’ll have complete control of your shotgun and the felt-recoil will be significantly reduced.

Tactical Mossberg Shotgun Handguard Staps 20 GA Shells Holder

I wanted to give everyone another option to use a shell holder that didn’t have to be installed with a Picatinny Rail system. If you bought the 20 gauge model, this Mossberg Handguard strap is for you. It holds 4 20 gauge shells and is easily velcro-attached to the tactical strap on the forend of the shotgun. Personally, I think it can be distracting to have my shells right underneath my hand, but this is a good alternative to spend less money and still customize your shotgun. the velcro will stay in place and not move, so it’s going to be effective and allow you to quickly cycle shells through if you’re in a hurry.

GripOn Textured Rubber Grip Wrap for Shockwave Raptor Mossberg

The GripOn Textured Rubber grip wrap is a no-brainer for me because it doesn’t inhibit any other attachment or the functionality of the shotgun. It’s easily attached to any model of the Shockwave and provides an improved grip for less than $13.00. This grip is easily attached with all necessary equipment included in the packaging for quick and easy installation. This grip wrap will improve your grip in humid environments where your hands will get sweaty and slick, shooting in the rain, or if you have gloves on your hands. You can easily remove the wrap with little no residue left on it, but you can’t reuse the grip once you take it off. Either way, I would always add this grip to my Raptor Grip for a more secure and comfortable feel on the grip.

Depring MOLLE Tactical 25 Rounds Shotshell Pouch Holder

Although this can’t be attached to the Shockwave, this Molle pouch is compact and hols up to 2 shells with an easy velcro open tab. The Molle straps allow you to easily fasten this pouch onto your shotgun vest, any ballistic vests, or a backpack. I love the idea that you can hold 25 shells on your body while being able to have an additional 4-6 on the gun and still chamber 6 shells inside the shotgun. If this doesn’t provide enough firepower with 35 shells, you need to practice more or get professional help to fix your mechanics.

Mossberg 590 Tactical Review| Everything You Need To Know Before You Buy

Mossberg 590 Tactical

The Mossberg 590 Tactical is the most widely dispersed and utilized tactical shotguns in the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies in the country. The Mossberg 590 Tactical is incredibly versatile with applications in home defense and close-quarters combat (CQB). The Mossberg 590 Tactical is specifically designed for person-to-person use in either warfare or in a self-defense situation. I wouldn’t recommend the Tactical for any kind of hunting because Mossberg has the 500 Hunting shotgun designed for longer ranges with extended barrels and lower ammo capacity. The Tactical models are built with dual extractors, twin action bars, an anti-jam elevator, and a positive steel-to-steel lockup. There are 16 separate 590 Tactical models, each built with the individual in mind. In this blog, we will discuss the 9-Shot, 590 SPX, and the 590 Flex Tactical.

Specs Mossberg 590 9-Shot:

  • Tri-rail forend allows you to customize your shotgun with lights, lasers, and added grips
  • Adjustable stock for customization with the length of pull (LOP)
  • The twin action bars ensure the action is smooth every pull without any added exertion

Features:

  • 12 Gauge, 20 Gauge, and .410 Bore Models
  • 3″ Chambers in 12/20 Gauge; (2.5″ Chamber in .410)
  • 18.5 or 20″ Barrels with Stand-Offs, Muzzlebrakes
  • Free Gun Lock/10-Year Limited Warranty Included

Why Should I Buy The Mossberg 590 9-Shot Tactical Shotgun?

The dual extractors in the Mossberg 590 Tactical give the shooter more options to load/unload as fast as possible in different positions. The twin action bars prevent any binding of the metal when pumping the shotgun, which increases the durability, smoothness, and longevity of the shotgun. The anti-jam elevator allows the shell to be extracted straight up and out of the barrel without double-feeding or misfeeding a shell. Whether you’re law enforcement or military, knowing your shotgun won’t jam, break, bind, or misfeed is paramount to your confidence. Mossberg ensures the 590 Tactical models will work when you need them and for as long as you need them. This is another reason why so many American’s want the 590 Tactical models for their home-defense shotgun.

Where Can I Buy the Mossberg 590 9-Shot Tactical Shotgun?

Mossberg doesn’t sell their weapons directly to customers due to legal reasons, but 3 separate companies exclusively sell their weapons. The Shootingstore, Gearfire, and Gallary of Guns, exclusively sell Mossberg Shotguns. There are hundreds of stores across the country that sell Mossberg as well, so type your zip code in the Mossberg Dealer Locator and it will show the stores closest to you. Personally, I recommend buying from Palmetto State Armory because they offer a great warranty on all of their products and offer some of the best discounts for active-duty military, veterans, and law enforcement officers (LEO). You can also buy Mossberg from RK Guns if you live in a rural area and are lucky enough to have a Rural King nearby.

Mossberg 590 Special Purpose Tactical (SPX)

The Mossberg 590 SPX is a brand new design that features a tactical adjustable stock, a pistol grip, and an 18.5″ (also comes in 20″) barrel. The SPX model is built with a ghost ring sight, which provides a clear picture of the front fiber optic sight.  The ghost ring with the fiber optic provides rapid target acquisition and the FLEX 6-position stock allows for customization in the length of pull. Fully collapsed, the stock will bring the length of pull to 10.75″ to limit the amount of time it takes to pull your shotgun up to shoot. The cylinder bore is chambered in 3″ to provide the largest shell shot allowed by law. The pistol grip provides much better ergonomics to standard shotguns because you can gain more control of the gun, in conjunction with the highly rigid synthetic stock.

Specs Mossberg 590 SPX:

Gauge 12
Capacity 6 + 1
Chamber 3″
Barrel Length 18.5″
Sight/Base Ghost Ring, Front Fiber Optic
Choke Cylinder Bore
LOP Type Adjustable
LOP 10.75″-14.25″
Barrel Finish Matte Blued
Stock Finish FLEX 6-Pos Adjustable Synthetic, FLEX Pistol Grip (Black)
Weight 7; 5.75
Length 36.37″; 31″

Pros:

  • Shorter barrel reduces the overall weight
  • The front strap allows for even greater control of the shotgun during follow-up shots
  • The Pistol grip can be easily removed for great customization opportunities
  • Provides 7 shots to ensure you hit and disable any threat presented to you
  • As a lefty, I haven’t had to adjust anything on this shotgun to fit my needs
  • The top rail system allows for optics or scopes to be easily attached

Features:

  • Ambidextrous safety lever mounted on top
  • 18.5 or 20″ Barrels with Stand-Offs, Muzzlebrakes
  • Free Gun Lock/10-Year Limited Warranty Included

Why Should I Buy The Mossberg 590 Special Purpose Tactical Shotgun?

The 590 Special Purpose Tactical Shotgun is meant for LEO, military forces, or competition shooters in the 3-Gun shooting competition held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). I would never recommend this for hunting because hunting shotguns have a 26″-32″ barrel for reaching out and touching birds up to 50 yards. With an 18.5″ barrel, you won’t be able to shoot accurately more than 30 yards with buckshot or birdshot. This 12 gauge shotgun is meant to defend your life and shoot rapidly with precision and power in mind.

What is FLEX Technology From Mossberg?

One of the most revolutionary and creative designs belongs to Mossberg with its FLEX Tool-less Locking System (TLS). The whole point of the FLEX TLS is to give shooters the ultimate customization ability for their guns. It’s a series of 3 (patent-pending) connectors that allow shooters to adjust or swap out the stock, forend, and recoil pad without any tools. FLEX TLS gives each individual shooter the ability to customize their gun for an endless amount of shooting applications. For example, if you want a light, laser, and optic for SWAT or military use, you can simply change the standard forend to the FLEX Tri-Rail. The FLEX TLS can swap out stocks for an overall shorter shotgun/rifle and you can change the recoil pad to your desired length. The FLEX TLS can be used in conjunction with almost every Mossberg created to enhance your capabilities and ensure your 100% comfortable with every aspect of your gun.

MOSSBERG FLEX TACTICAL TRI-RAIL FOREND

Mossberg has the FLEX TLS incorporated fully into both the 500 and 590 models, but you don’t have to have one of those models to take advantage of the system. FLEX was designed to be purpose-driven and guide each shooter to find the best combination of parts for their style or purpose of shooting. I can’t recommend a better system to customize your shotgun than the FLEX TLS. The fact that you don’t need ANY tools and takes minutes to install makes a world of difference for those who value time.

It even comes with a hook for a sling attachment to avoid carrying your shotgun for long periods of time. This specific attachment is compatible with the FLEX 22 Models due to the specifications of that model.

Mossberg Flex 590 Tactical Shotgun

The Mossberg FLEX 590 Tactical is my favorite of the tactical shotgun because of the incorporated FLEX technology and the 9-shell capacity. The 590 FLEX Tactical Shotgun sets itself apart by its ability to be customized for dozens of applications. This shotgun is already equipped with the FLEX TLS for quick and easy installation of everything from optics, scopes, lights, and lasers. The FLEX model is lighter, but it’s also about 5-7″ longer than most other tactical models. The reason for this is to enhance the capabilities and allow shooters to collapse the stock if they want the length shortened.

Specs:

Gauge 12
Capacity 8+1
Chamber 3″
Barrel Length 20″
Sight/Base Bead
Choke Cylinder Bore
LOP Type Adjustable
LOP 11″ – 14.5″

  • Easily customizable
  • 20″ barrel provides a longer range for a bigger area to clear
  • 9-shell capacity is more than enough to get the job done
  • Tri-Rail system provides a lightweight and stable platform for a multitude of attachments

Features:

  • Ambidextrous safety lever mounted on top
  • 20″ Barrels with Stand-Offs, Muzzlebrakes

Why Should I Buy The Mossberg 590 Special Purpose Tactical Shotgun?

The 590 FLEX Tactical Shotgun is perfect for a 3-Gun shooting competition held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). This shotgun is the jack of all trades when it comes to self-defense and military CQB operations. If you’re in the market for a Tactical shotgun and want to be able to customize the shotgun to fit your exact needs, this is the gun for you. I’m a little biased because this is the tactical shotgun that I own for my personal defense in case I have to defend my family. I can tell you that this shotgun is smooth, accurate, has a low felt recoil, and works great with a light and a red-dot sight attachment.

Peltor| Buyer’s Guide 2020

What is a Peltor Headset?

Peltor is a noise-canceling headset designed to be able to speak and communicate clearly under noisy conditions. Peltor headsets are produced by 3M Technologies, which grants them access to some of the most advanced technology in the world. Peltor headsets have made an outstanding reputation in the military community for its noise-canceling and environmental listening capabilities. Peltor headsets are trusted by millions of construction workers, mechanics, Flightline crew, Militaries across the world, hunters, and shooting range officers. Peltor headsets are generally more expensive than anything else on the market, but when your hearing is at stake, it’s well worth the investment.

What is an IP68 Rating from the IEC?

I don’t want to be the guy who just throws out specs without giving you an explanation of what they mean. The IEC is the authority on testing electronics and their ability to withstand environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, sound, water, heat, and pressure. According to the IEC & Trusted Reviews, the IP ratings ranging from 0-8, depending on the level of protection the product was tested at. An IP rating of 68 means that the Peltor headset will stand up against water being sprayed from a nozzle that is less than 12.5mm (0.49″) in diameter.  It is protected against dust, dirt, sand, and can handle being dropped from the top of a Humvee or MRAP without breaking or damaging the headset.  The 8 in the rating guarantees the Peltor will be completely waterproof past 1 meter (3.3 feet) of water for 30 minutes.

What is a Mission Audio Profile (MAP)?

The newest Peltor headsets are offering a new technology called, Mission Audio Profile (MAP) that offers a new way to adjust the auditory settings. Each auditory setting is based on the anticipated role of the operator. There are 5 settings (Observation, Patrol, Conversation, Comfort, and Environmental Listening Off) that offer different levels of volume and adjust to each situation an operator can find themselves in. Prior to MAPs, headsets could only turn the volume up or down based on what they wanted to hear more of. MAPs are very intuitive and such a revolutionary concept that has been perfected by 3M.

MAP 1: Observation

The Observation setting is the loudest volume setting and has the widest frequency response of all the 5 settings. You’ll simply switch the setting to 1 if you’re providing overwatch of a target or friendly force and need to hear everything around you without blocking any environmental condition out. This is a great setting for optimizing your hearing capabilities if you’re stopped at a location to hear your surroundings.

MAP 2: Patrol

The Patrol setting allows you to hear at a very high volume of your surroundings, but it muffles high frequencies. The whole point of this setting is to allow an operator on patrol to ignore the sound of your body armor moving around, gravel crunching under your feet, and the sound of grass and twigs being shredded as you walk. The Patrol setting is going to give you more clarity to hear any movement around you, so you’re less likely to be caught off guard during a patrol.

MAP 3: Conversation

The Conversation setting is perfect for limiting the environmental conditions that are too loud to speak face-to-face. The Conversation setting is set to maximize the frequencies that resemble human speech. All other sounds, such as vehicles, wind, rain, and gunfire are lowered to allow each member of the team to speak clearly, without raising their voice.

MAP 4: Comfort

The Comfort setting is designed for use while the operators are in transport, such as a helicopter, Humvee, or MRAP. Comfort setting provides a very low volume and narrow frequency to highlight normal speech frequencies. This mode should never be used as a combat setting because you will only hear the voices of your teammates even if you have gunshots going off right next to you.

MAP 5: Environmental Listening Off

The MAP 5 setting allows you to turn off ALL environmental conditions in the high stress- high noise environments. This setting is great for communicating with your team when you’re under active fire from the enemy and the outside noise is too much. This setting allows you to hear only your team and cuts off all outside noise from gunfire, explosions, vehicles, and the sound of footsteps.

What is Natural Interaction Behavior (NIB)?

The NIB function allows 4 team members to speak simultaneously without any interference from the radio connection. The NIB function also allows up to 60 people to listen to the communication within a 10 meter (32 feet) radius. You can activate the NIB function by using a Voice Activated Switch (VOX) for a hands-free option or a push-to-talk device for a hands-on approach. The VOX switch will automatically adjust to the noise environment, meaning the volume won’t ever blow someone’s eardrums out or be muffled by gunfire near the operator. 3M also took the advice of elite operators from our military and added a button on the left ear cup to turn off/on easier while being able to switch from VOX to a Push-To-Talk (PTT) device.

What Is A Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Noise Control Act of 1972 regulates every device sold in America that is designed to control noise. The NRR on the EPA label describes the average decibel reduction when worn as recommended. 3M Peltor headsets are designated to fill roles in everything from construction crews, military members, flight crews, and miners. Once the EPA designates each product for decibel reduction claims, the headset is sent to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to test the product. After ANSI tests each products’ claim for decibel reduction based on the EPA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gives the final approval for every product with an NRR. One thing to keep in mind in regards to the Peltor is that the higher the NRR number is, the higher the noise reduction it will have.

What Are The Types of Peltor Headsets?

Peltor produces many types of hearing protection, from Occupational hearing protection designed for construction workers, Flightline workers, mechanics, and miners to tactical headsets designed for military and SWAT members. Each headset is certified ANSI and approved by OSHA to ensure customers that their products are in compliance with the federal government. Peltor separates the capabilities of their products into 3 distinct types of protection; Tactical Communication, 2-Way Radios, and Environmental Listening.

Tactical Communication: 3M™ PELTOR™ ComTac™ VI NIB Headset

The Peltor ComTac VI is rated an IP68 from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).  All Peltor ComTac VI headsets are Omni Directional Environmental, which means they will pick up sound from a 360-degree range around you. This allows the operator to speak into the microphone from the front, side, or back and have no difference in voice clarity. The Natural Interaction Behavior (NIB) feature cuts the ambient noise from MRAPs, helicopters, boats, gunfire, and everything in-between. Peltor ComTac is even built with hearing protection from the pulsing sound of gunfire in your ears or a bomb going off near you. This guide will give you all the information you’ll need to know before making a commitment to your hearing protection and communication devices. The ComTac VI also comes with the MAPS function for unrivaled versatility on the battlefield.

Pros:

  • MAP function is revolutionary and is changing the way operators use communication on the battlefield
  • The NIB function enhances environmental listening capabilities of the team
  • ComTac VI provides an IP68 rating for a more versatile product
  • ComTac VI headsets are omnidirectional to provide more clarity and versatility in the speech of each operator

Cons:

  • It doesn’t specify whether nor not it provides salt-water resistance. The IEC rating is only for freshwater, so SEALs might want to stick with the ComTac III

3M™ PELTOR™ COMTAC™ III

The ComTac III ACH Tactical Communication Headset is one of the most widely used headsets for elite military members across the globe, from Navy SEALs and Army Special Forces to NATO response forces and the British Special Air Service (SAS). The ComTac III provides protection against impulse noise, such as explosions, and rapid gunfire, while still protecting against wind and consistent gunfire. Although the ComTac III doesn’t have the MAPS system or the NIB function, it does have similar environmental listening (talk-through) capabilities. The ComTac III provides clear and concise 2-way audio communication via radios and intercoms and adjusts automatically to the environmental conditions around you to enhance the clarity of your communication. It also provides 3 configurations (Single Comm, Hearing Defender, and Dual Comm) to provide versatility to the individual operator and team.

Pros:

  • 500 hours of battery life (2 AAA batteries)
  • The ambidextrous noise-canceling boom mic can be mounted on either left or right side by the operator
  • Salt water-resistant
  • Provides a lot of customization to add your own personal style
  • External communications and “talk-through” are battery independent for Rx/Tx fail-safe. In the unlikely event of electronic failure or battery depletion, external communications will continue to function
  • Provides protection from 23 decibels
  • Fits Advanced Combat Helmet, MICH Helmet, Enhanced Combat Helmet, Ops-Core FAST Helmet, and the next generation IHPS

Cons:

  • No MAPS
  • No NIB function
  • Very expensive, especially with the ComTac VI being updated and providing more features
  • Its microphone is not omnidirectional like the ComTac VI

2-Way Radios: 3M™ Peltor™ Lite-Com Pro II UHF Radio Headset

3M™ Peltor™ Lite-Com Pro II UHF 2-way radio headset is perfect for construction workers, mechanics, warehouse workers, and range technicians. The 2-way radio provides a great balance between blocking out noise from your environment and communicating clearly with your team members. The Lite-Com Pro II provides a built-in frequency programmable UHF radio. Each headset will give workers up to 30 channels to listen to and comes with a PTT and Hands-free VOX function for quick and easy communication. 2 external microphones allow the worker to hear all ambient noise around them so they’re not surprised by machinery or vehicles nearby.

Pros:

  • Great protection for civilian workers
  • Radio provides 30 channels for each headset
  • 25-decibel NRR
  • provides even and constant pressure on your ears to prevent any slippage during movement
  • Provides both PTT and VOX communication methods for great versatility

Cons:

  • Not as versatile as the ComTac models, but meant for civilian use only
  • Very expensive
  • Most radios don’t have a great battery life

Environmental Listening: Lite-Com Plus 2-Way Radio

Environmental listening headsets are designed for use in construction, manufacturing, processing, equipment maintenance, crane operations, and many other applications extremely noisy environments. The point of environmental listening headsets is to allow clear communication between workers without the interference of their environmental conditions. These headsets also prevent nearby workers from overhearing incoming communications in order to maintain privacy and avoid distractions. Environmental Listening headsets can be programmed as a listen-only device to allow the worker to receive voice and audio messages, without being able to be heard. The other program is a 2-way headset that allows the worker to listen to communication and respond to the received communication. These headsets and earpieces are ideal for maintaining communication between different areas of a workplace and coordinating teamwork at construction sites, emergency scenes, refineries, airports, and other loud settings.

Pros:

  • Intuitive headsets that are designed for noisy environments where communication is important
  • The Lite-Com Plus offers incredible versatility and 25-decibel NRR
  • The earmuff stays on your ears when your moving, lifting, bending over or jumping up to grab something

Cons:

  • Too expensive for a lot of smaller companies to invest in

Why Should I Buy The Mossberg Shockwave?

The Mossberg Shockwave is a revolutionary shotgun that has changed the way American’s can carry a shotgun. There is no other shotgun that you’ll find on the market that has a 14.3″ barrel and still packs the punch of a standard size 12 gauge shotgun. This shotgun is perfect for plinking and will give you hours of fun and excitement as you learn the capabilities. Personally, I believe this shotgun is perfect to use as a truck gun because it’s small enough to fit on your gun rack and not too big to obstruct your view out the back window. I absolutely love the idea of using this as a home-defense shotgun with the newly added Raptor Grip. The grip provides a significantly reduced recoil and the front strap gives you the confidence that your hand won’t ever slip in front of the muzzle. The front strap is a little course and can provide irritation if you spend a day shooting at the range, but I recommend wearing a glove for those days.

Where Can I Buy The Mossberg Shockwave?

Mossberg can be bought by every major gun store in the world because of its impeccable reputation as the gold standard for shotguns. Buying from Palmetto State Armory is a great choice for Veterans, Active Duty Military, and law enforcement officers. The discount you’ll receive will make it so you don’t pay any taxes on your shotgun and the extended warranty is the best anywhere you’ll look. RK Guns is a great alternative if you live in a rural area with a Rural King store (I think I go for the free popcorn more than anything else). Although buying directly from Mossberg is impossible due to legal matters, they sell their guns through 3 main stores.  Mossberg sells their guns through Gearfire, The Shootingstore, and GallaryofGuns by easily typing in your area code to find the closest Mossberg dealer to your location.

Should I Register My Warranty With Mossberg?

Yes! I get it’s annoying as hell to register products online, but registering your Mossberg will protect you by updating you on all legal matters. To be clear, you’ll still get your extended warranty with all Mossberg products you buy, even if you don’t register your shotgun. By registering your shotgun with Mossberg, it allows them to update you with all pertinent legal information that comes out every month. This will make sure you’re completely informed on any legal matter that comes up regarding your Shockwave.

How is a Mossberg Shockwave Legal To Own in the U.S.?

As many gun owner’s know, the National Firearms Act (NFA) has had many issues with the idea of a shotgun with a barrel as short as 14″. The reason the ATF has an issue with short barrel shotguns, is they’re essentially handguns with the power of a standard-sized shotgun (18-22″ barrel). In the case of the Mossberg Shockwave, the ATF ruled that it falls under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), but not under the restrictions of the NFA. Since the shoulder stock was removed, it’s not classified as a firearm under the NFA, which means the Shockwave is legal to own in the United States. For a Full explanation on the ruling, read the full letter from the ATF, here.

What is The Raptor Grip by Shockwave technologies?

The Birds Eye Raptor Grip is designed to replace the shoulder stock of the shotgun, in order to make it in compliance with the NFA. The Raptor Grip provides a very unorthodox and unique grip angle. Shockwave boasts that the grip reduces felt recoil by 90%, has a no-slip grip texture, and is made of a glass-reinforced polymer that would need to be smashed with a hydraulic machine to break. I was a little nervous to try and hip-fire a shotgun while holding onto this grip, but it’s only 9 oz (0.5lbs) and significantly reduces the overall weight of the shotgun. If you want to add a Raptor Grip to your shotgun, You’ll need a 3/16″ hex wrench to install the grip, but all the mounting hardware is included. Another reason to buy a Raptor grip is they’re owned and operated by a combat veteran. Anytime I can get a new concept revolving around a gun and support a fellow vet is a win-win.

Mossberg Shockwave- 20 Gauge

The Shockwave has been recently chambered in 20 Gauge to offer an even softer felt recoil than the 12 Gauge will provide. Normally, people use a 20 Gauge for hunting birds, squirrels, rabbits, and muskrat. There are not any real differences in this gun from the 12 gauge, except a 20 gauge will always shoot a smaller shell. One thing to remember is a 20 gauge will always be yellow to make sure hunters don’t load the wrong ammo. I like the 20 gauge a little more than the 12 gauge because the felt recoil is a little less and I can be more accurate with it.

Mossberg 590 Shockwave Vs. Mossberg 590 Tactical

To avoid any confusion on the difference between a 590 Shockwave and 590 Tactical, the Shockwave is shorter and comes with the Raptor grip. Any type of tactical rifle comes with Picatinny rails and the option to change the synthetic grip to a pistol grip for better ergonomics. The Shockwave is a full 13″ shorter than the Mossberg 590, but doesn’t provide the level of accuracy at range. The biggest difference between the Shockwave doesn’t have a stock to establish 2-points of contact for better accuracy. However, what it lacks in stability, it makes up in its ability to pull up and fire much quicker than any other shotgun in the world.

Conclusion

The Mossberg 590 Shockwave is the most revolutionary self-defense shotgun on the market with its almost unbelievable shorter frame and barrel. the Shockwave had to be approved by the ATF due to its small size and the same power as any other 12 gauge shotgun. The 590 Shockwave got its name from collaborating with the Veteran owned and operated business of Shockwave Technologies. Shockwave Technologies created a revolutionary grip concept that replaced the original stock on the Mossberg 590 for enhanced mobility and less felt recoil (90% less!). The Shockwave barrel is more than 4″ shorter than the original Mossberg 590 and weighs almost 2 lbs lighter. I highly recommend giving the Shockwave a chance as a self-defense shotgun because it’s much easier to pull from the ground to your hip for quick firing capabilities.

USAA Response to Coronavirus Pandemic

USAA’s Response to COVID-19

Like many banking institutions around the country, USAA is trying to help its members out during the Coronavirus Pandemic with a return of $520 million. According to USAA, the bank will return a total of $520 million due to the lockdown causing less driving. Every USAA member with an auto insurance policy before April 1, 2020, will receive a 20% credit on 2 months of premiums within a month. There is nothing additional the USAA member needs to do in order to receive this 2-month credit other than checking their account in a few weeks. Besides the initial 2-month credit, USAA is revamping its services to fit the financial needs of its members.

Message From USAA CEO, Wayne Peacock:

“We understand the impact this pandemic is having on our country, and especially our military community and their families, many of whom also are working on the front lines of the crisis. Returning premiums provides timely help for our members,” said USAA President and CEO Wayne Peacock. “USAA has been facilitating the financial security of military members for nearly 100 years, and this is another way we can serve them well.”

USAA Auto and Property Insurance

USAA Auto Insurance is being adjusted due to the federal guidelines on isolation and stay-at-home orders from state governors. The good news for the hundreds of thousands of active duty military members is they won’t be losing their jobs, like the rest of Americans. However, this doesn’t change the impact sustained by their family members who have jobs outside of the military. With many soldiers living paycheck-to-paycheck this pandemic has been disastrous for every American, regardless of profession. With millions of veterans, active-duty soldiers, and their families unable to pay bills on time, USAA is giving us a reprieve from late fees until June 17, 2020. USAA has vowed to not cancel any car insurance or property insurance policy due to late payments during this time of chaos. If you’re one of the millions of people who’ve lost their jobs and can’t pay your bills on time, call the Auto and Property Insurance office at, 800-531-8722.

USAA Bank

According to FiveThirtyEight, more than 16 million American’s have lost their jobs within the past 3 weeks. Unfortunately, this pandemic has shown no mercy on anyone and is not expected to slow down anytime soon. The first part of the program includes a 90-day credit card payment deferral. Some people may think of this as a way they can spend more money without paying it back. A deferral just means that for 90 days, you won’t have to pay your credit card bill, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay it back. USAA is also offering a 60-day payment extension on consumer loans. This means that if you’ve refinanced a home or have a mortgage loan with USAA, you’re not required to make payments for 60 days or 2 months. USAA will include a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) special mortgage payment assistance for those who qualify. Finally, USAA is providing assistance with deposit accounts for business owners in need. A deposit account is simply something like a Saving account where you can deposit money and withdrawal money at any point.

How Do I Qualify For USAA Banking Assistance?

After speaking directly with USAA, I have found that the eligibility requirements are based on USAA membership. Normally, if you’re looking for a HELOC, you’ll need a credit score above 620 and a record of paying your bills on time. However, during this pandemic, USAA is more forgiving to its members in need, so the best way to know is to call 800-531-0832 and they will explain everything to you, directly.

*If you’re not a USAA member and need help with getting out of debt, Freedom Debt Relief is a good option.

Life and Health Insurance

USAA is offering a 60-day extension on all life and health insurance policies, which means if your policy ends today (April 16, 2020), you get the same coverage without any extra fees until June 16, 2020). USAA also offers a 30-day grace period, which means you can pay your bill up to 30 days after the due date without a penalty fee. This will allow members who are living paycheck-to-paycheck enough time to get the stimulus check from the government to help with bills. If you have any questions regarding Life and Health Insurance call, 800-531-8068 for help.

Does USAA Help With Coronavirus Testing?

Yes! USAA will waive all co-pays and deductibles associated with COVID-19 testing and reimburse you for any bill associated with testings. The only catch is you have to be tested after Feb, 4, 2020 and you have to have some form of USAA Medicare Supplement plan. According to Medicare.Gov, each hospital stay will cost you $1,408 for the benefit period in which you enter the hospital. USAA will pay all costs, regardless of the benefit period, if your stay is related to the Coronavirus. The only thing you need to ensure is whether the hospital accepts Medicare. If you’re in the market for life insurance, conduct as much research as possible, starting with our top 10 life insurance list.

Annuities

Most American’s have annuities without even knowing what they are and how they impact your financial health. To keep it as simple as possible,  an annuity is a type of insurance that guarantees you’ll get a steady paycheck for the rest of your life or a specified time by the account holder. It can help protect you against the risks of stock market volatility and outliving your money. There are 2 types of annuities that you should consider, which are Deferred Aunnities and Income Annuities. A deferred annuity is going to help you prepare for retirement, so they’re best for younger workers who plan to work for at least 20 years. Income annuities are best for those who are within 1 year of retirement and want their money sooner rather than later. The best part about an annuity is if the economy tanks and the Stock market crumbles, your money will be safe from the fluctuation. However, annuities don’t earn a lot of money, so you’ll need to keep your money in longer if you want to reap the benefits. An annuity will ensure that no matter what the economy does in the next 20 years, you’ll always have money until you die.

What Does USAA Recommend to Prepare For Financial Uncertainty?

1. Start or Maintain an Emergency FundMost emergency funds are anywhere from 3-6 months of your monthly income put aside for hard times (such as a worldwide pandemic). Personally, I have 6 months of my income placed in a separate account that I don’t touch unless I absolutely need it. Everyone’s financial situation is different, so don’t beat yourself up if you can’t afford o put away 6 months.

2. Revisit Your Budget– Once you put aside your emergency fund, it’s best to sit down and put all of your finances in one place for better organization. By using the budget tool, you’ll know exactly how much money you have and how much you spend every month. Using the USAA online tools will allow you to track what you spend and allow you to see how much you owe every month. I can’t stress enough the importance of good budgeting in a time of such uncertainty.

3. Pay down revolving Debt- Without sounding like a patronizing a-hole, make sure you’re continuing to pay down your debt, if possible. it’s great to see banks supporting Americans going through rough times, but, in the end of the day, you’ll need to keep debt from racking up. If your debt goes unpaid and credit cards get maxed out, banks won’t lend to you when you really need it if you’ve shown you can’t pay your bills.

4. Stay In Contact With Your 1st-Sergeant/Commander- As most troop movements come to a stand-still, there are may soldiers without a home, or legitimate place to quarantine during this pandemic. Commanders are constantly putting out new protocols for soldiers to follow, especially for those in transition from one place to another.

5. Get Advice From Professionals- Each base offers a Military and Family Readiness Center with financial counselors available to provide financial guidance. You can access these professionals for free for active-duty members at their Family Readiness Centers. With the quarantine, they will do online, over the phone, or mail you documents you might need to assist you.

7 Laser Sights to Buy on Amazon in 2020

7 Pistol laser’s on Amazon

Customizing your pistol is important to many gun owners because everyone has different hand sizes, vision, ability, and training levels. Personally, Every handgun I own, except for my Glock 43 has a laser sight on it. There are 3 kinds of people that buy lasers for their pistols; competition shooters, owners that want to look cool (no judgment), and shooters who want to gain an advantage in target acquisition. I’d like to think I’m the one that wants to gain an advantage with the split second that a laser can give you over an assailant who doesn’t have a laser. I try to keep my laser attachments light and small to ensure I can still holster my gun without modifying my holster to fit a bulkier gun. These laser sights that I list below, meet the requirements for what I look for in laser.

Lasercross CL105 New Magnetic Charging Internal Green Laser Sight

The Lasercross CL105 is a combination laser and flashlight that will fit on any pistol or rifle with a 20mm wide Picatinny rail system. I have used this laser with my Glock 19 because it’s a full-sized pistol that allows no interference in my holster. This laser is exceptionally bright and is ambidextrous to accommodate both left and right-handed shooters. I love the ability to use a flashlight and laser at the same time without having to add 2 separate products. Personally, in a self-defense situation, I’d use my flashlight and laser in conjunction with each other to be more effective. By using this Lasercross flashlight, you can distort the vision of your assailant while providing a clear sight picture of your intended target. The green laser will ensure your bullet goes exactly where it’s aimed (given proper mechanics).

  • Works great with most pistols and any rifle size.
  • A strong battery life for all 3 modes

  • It’s not waterproof or fog proof
  • 220 lumens for a flashlight is good up to 60 yards

HiLight P5GL 400lm Strobe Flashlight Green Laser Sight Combo

The HiLight P5GL 400 lumen laser sight is one of my favorite attachments to place on my subcompact guns (Glock 26) because it’s incredibly light and only 2.5″ long. This allows me to holster my concealed carry pistol without any catch. The height of the laser sight is kind of high, but it shouldn’t impact your holster or your ability to attach it because it only needs 1.3″ of clearance. The HiLight is also much better in the elements than a lot of sights because it’s waterproof and extremely durable. The fact that the HiLight Laser only weighs 2 oz is just the icing on the cake for me. The last thing you want when you buy a lighter gun is to add a heavy attachment. This laser sight allows you to keep the integrity of your pistol the same while adding an advantage on target acquisition.

Sniper TPO GL03 Magnetic Charging Green Laser Sight Flashlight Combo

The Sniper TPO GLO3 laser sight and flashlight combo is the 2nd lightest laser sight in this blog and is tied with the highest laser wavelength of any other model. The reason I like this laser sight so much is the weight and the battery life. There is no other laser sight that I’ve seen or reviewed that has a 9-hour laser battery and still can give you 1 1/2 hours of light and laser time. This is crucial for those who need a laser for operational missions in the military or in Border Patrol. The Sniper TPO allows you to reach out to more than 300 yards in low light with a brighter and more stable beam than most other products. This laser and light combo is only 1.8″ long and fits perfectly on any pistol you could possibly carry, from a Glock 19 and Glock 26 to a Walther P99.

Laspur Sub Compact Tactical Rail Mount Low Profile Laser Sight

The Laspur Sub-Compact laser sight is great for those who don’t want a flashlight combo added to their pistol. I chose this laser sight because it’s incredibly light, fits on an M1913 Picatinny Rail & Weaver Rail system, and fits perfectly in any holster I’ve ever owned. I’ve found that this laser is shock-proof for at least 100 rounds and keeps my zero in the same position. The Laspur works best for full-sized pistols, shotguns, and rifles because it’s much longer than most other models I’ve reviewed here today. You’ll need at least 1.46″ of clearance between the rail groove on your gun and the trigger guard. This makes it difficult to use on subcompact pistols like the Glock 43x because it changed the dynamic of having such a small concealed pistol.

Laspur Sub Compact

Firefly V2 Flashlight Laser Sight

Firefly is one of my favorite companies to support because they are owned and operated by a combat veteran who has extensive experience with lasers and flashlight attachments. The Firefly V2 is the lightest, shortest, and most universal attachment we have on this list. The Firefly V2 boasts the highest overall laser wavelength of any other laser we’ve seen and has 6-adjustable settings. Using the Strobe setting along with the laser will disorient your target and provide a clear laser beam for quick and easy target acquisition.

Infilight Compact Red Laser Dot Sight

The Infilight compact red laser is one of my favorite lasers because, for whatever reason, I see red lasers better than I see green lasers in low light( I’m color blind with green and yellow). Infilight is relatively priced well and fits perfectly on any firearm you could ever want to attach it to. My favorite aspect of this laser is its ability to absorb the recoil and vibration of the firearm operation (Shock-proof). I’ve put hundreds of rounds through my Glock 19 using this laser and never had to tighten or adjust the attachment to maintain a proper zero. Personally, I would rather buy the Firefly for $20 more, but if you’re looking for a good quality red laser, this is a great option for you.

Crimson Trace CMR-206 Rail Master Universal Green Laser Sight

Crimson Trace is one of my favorite companies to buy from because their products always seem to be better than any other company I’ve tried (With a higher price point too). This laser sight even feels different than most others and has the most secure locking system I’ve experienced. They call it the Secure Locking Technology© (SLT) and it keeps your zero better than any other product for longer than any other product. I was unable to find accurate dimensions anywhere online, but I know this product fits on my compact pistol and my full-sized pistols with no problem.

Lockdown Puck | Review

Lockdown

Lockdown is a technology company that specializes in monitoring your home, valuables, and guns with advanced Smart Home technology. Lockdown is the only company in the world that successfully integrates advanced technology into the gun storage and security business. They were created out of a necessity to push the way American’s store their guns into the 21st Century. Every safe or vault built before Lockdown is designed entirely to keep people out and hopefully protect your guns from fire damage. The engineers at Lockdown noticed that for decades, their family’s weapons and valuables were susceptible to the relative humidity inside the safe. In response, Lockdown created the Puck to monitor humidity and temperature to ensure your guns and valuables don’t rust or develop mold.

Lockdown Puck

The Lockdown Puck is the flagship product from Lockdown that provides the duel-purpose of monitoring and security from the control of their patented Logic App. Many other Smart Home security features are voice-controlled and give you the feeling that someone is listening to everything going on in your home. I love the idea that everything is controlled from your phone, without invasive voice commands. By placing the Puck into your gun safe, vault, cabinet, drawer, etc., you can monitor the relative humidity and temperature in real-time from anywhere in the world that has Wifi. The Puck also connects to the magnetic door sensors that come with the Puck to ensure no door, window, cabinet, drawer, or wine cellar is opened without your knowledge.

What Does the Puck Come With?

The Lockdown Puck is $110.00 for the base price on its website and has been recently removed from Amazon at the same price. I want to clear things up with what you get for the $110.00 because you’ll need to buy more products to get the most out of the Puck. For example, you’ll receive 1 magnetic door sensor and a mounting bracket with the relative hardware to place your puck anywhere that can be mounted (i.e. inside a cabinet, above a door, etc…). For every room you want to monitor, you’ll place the Puck in that room and magnetic door sensor where you see fit (i.e. window, cabinet, drawer). Your Logic App will sync to multiple Puck’s to allow you to access and monitor all of your Smart features from your phone. This feature on your Logic App will ensure all of your products are organized and streamlined so you know exactly what every Puck is monitoring at all times.

  • 1 PUCK™ Unit
  • 1 Nine-foot Micro USB power cord
  • 1 Magnetic door sensor
  • 1 Mounting bracket and hardware
  • 4 AA batteries

Does The Puck Control Humidity?

No, the Puck monitors the humidity and temperature in the room, container, safe, cabinet, or drawer that it’s placed in. What separates the Puck from its competition is the ability to use multiple products in conjunction with the Puck. For example, if you use the Lockdown Silica Gel in your safe along with the Puck, you’ll be able to set a threshold of humidity you want and the Silica Gel will absorb the humidity inside the safe. If the humidity reaches outside the threshold, the Puck will alert you on your Logic App so you can remedy the issue before any condensation or mildew forms.

Silica Gel

Silica Gel absorbs moisture in the air of your safe or container to prevent the build-up of mildew, condensation, and rust on your valuables. Silica crystals will turn color once they’re saturated and can be recharged in the oven for continual use.  Lockdown has 3 separate size recommendations for Silica, based on the size of the room or safe you want to protect from humidity causing damages. Using Silica Gel is a great way to help, but Lockdown has created other products to ensure your firearms remain protected if your Silica isn’t enough.

Dehumidifier Rod

The Lockdown Golden Dehumidifier Rod is the best way, in my opinion, to control the humidity in your safe or container. The Golden Rod forces warm air throughout the safe to ensure the inside the safe remains around 70 degrees Fereinheight. According to the International Journal of Electrochemical Science, rust will start to form on metals when they reach temperatures above 71 degrees Fereinheight.  The Golden Rod protects approximately 100 cubic feet from mildew, rust, and mold and can be easily bracketed onto any surface. By using the Silica Gel and Golden Rod Dehumidifier Rod, your Puck will give you the peace of mind that your guns are protected from rust without having to lift a finger.

Lockdown Smart Plug

Lockdown Smart Plugs are controlled entirely from the Logic App on your phone after you connect them to your puck. The Smart Plugs are an incredible tool you can use to make your life easier by turning your lights, coffee machine, TV, etc. on and off no matter where you’re at in the world (Wifi needed). The thing I like about the Smart Plug the most is the ability to use it to enhance the security of your home by setting a timer on your Logic App. The Puck will automatically turn on/off your appliances at any time you have set to ensure any neighbor or potential thief doesn’t know when you’re away or home. For example, if you took a European vacation to Germany for 2 weeks and wanted to make it look like you were home at 6:00 PM every night, you could simply set a timer and your puck will turn on your lights, TV, and any other appliance you want. Although the Smart Plug won’t be out until November, I will use it on my  Lockdown Compact dehumidifier. I will set the plug on a timer and once I see my humidity reach high levels, the Plug will automatically turn on and start removing humidity.

In-Plain-Sight Shelf

The In-Plain-Sight-Shelf is one of those products that you show off to all your friends and family when they come to your home. It’s the most technologically advanced hidden gun safe you’ll ever find for this price. The hydraulic bar raises and lowers the hidden compartment with the touch of the hidden magnetic latch. The hidden magnetic latch opens within a second for quick access to your guns, in case of an emergency. The best part about this product is how inconspicuous it is to anybody coming inside your home. The whole point of the In-Plain-Sight-Shelf is to hide your guns in places that you spend a lot of time in, such as living room and kitchen. You could also hide your valuables, such as jewelry or important documents in plain sight to trick any would-be thief. The Puck will monitor the shelf to ensure that no one tampers or opens the shelf without alerting your Logic App, immediately.

Why Should I Buy The Lockdown Puck?

The Lockdown Puck has literally zero competitors for similar technology and capability. There is no other company in the world that offers gun owners the ability to integrate gun storage and security with Smart Home features. The Lockdown Puck has the ability to monitor and connect to 512 separate products and organizes all of them into 1 incredible interface. The Puck will ensure your guns are secure, protected from humidity, and will increase the overall security of your home for $110.00.

Does Lockdown Have a Subscription?

No! I have yet to see any company that offers customer support and around the clock service with no subscription. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to buy a product and know I won’t have to pay any extra fees. The idea that Lockdown is able to offer a product line with 41 (and counting) products and only charge the listed price shows their commitment to their customers. Most other companies offer subscription services ranging from $7-$30/month and offer very limited interface connectivity. Lockdown offers the Logic App for free and connects up to 512 products with no service fee.

Can The Puck Alert The Police of an Attempted Break-in?

Although the Puck doesn’t contact the police directly, it will immediately inform your contacts of an alarm. This ensures there is no subscription fee and you can have every person you know contact the police, if necessary.  I have notifications for all of my family members (brother in Ohio, Dad in Colorado, Sister in Michigan). It’s always a good idea to instruct your emergency contacts what to do in case they receive an alert. For example, I tell my emergency contacts if they can’t get a hold of me, they should call the police and inform them of my address and the alarm.

Conclusion

The Puck is a one-of-a-kind product that will revolutionize the way you care for your guns and valuables. There is no other product in the world that can monitor humidity and temperature while monitoring security. The Puck, in conjunction with other Lockdown products (such as Silica Gel and the rechargeable dehumidifier) will ensure your guns last decades longer than any other product on the market. The Puck connects to the Logic App, which organizes your products in an easy to use interface. My favorite part of the Puck and Lockdown as a whole is the fact that you don’t have to be a tech-savvy person to get the most out of this product. It’s incredibly user friendly and more affordable than any other products available.

5 Best Riflescopes for Hunting

Hunting Riflescopes

Having the right riflescope on your hunting rifle can be the difference between filling your freezer with wild game and explaining to your friends and family how you “barely” missed. Riflescopes can be very difficult to choose because there are so many models with the lingo that can be difficult to understand for many of us. I hunt with a 30-06 out here in Virginia, but I use a 6.5 Creedmoor out west to get a little more distance. I use a Vortex Crossfire II with my 30-06 and a Leopold VX with my 6.5 Creedmoor to give me the best chance at lining up a deer. This blog is focused on the top 5 riflescopes that I’d recommend and all of them are still in stock so there is no worry about Coronavirus fear ruining your hunt.

Riflescope Magnification

Riflescope magnification is often misunderstood because beginners always associate higher magnification with higher clarity and better picture. The average shot distance in Virginia is only about 100 yards. I took a deer last season at 172 yards, but that was further than any other shot I’ve taken before out here. You need to understand that the quality of your glass is much more important than the level of magnification. When Shooting from a tree stand, you’ll normally want a wider window so your field of view is wider. Very rarely will you ever need a scope more than a 6-power magnification while hunting in the east. However, if you’re hunting in the Rockies or Cascades, you’ll need at least a 14-power magnification. Personally, I would never shoot more than 700-800 yards in the Rockies because I’m not that great and my confidence wains as the swirling winds zip through the valleys that I’m laying in. A 14 power magnification is plenty for my range because Leopold makes some of the best glass you’ll ever find.

VORTEX CROSSFIRE II 6-18X 44 AO RIFLESCOPE

For someone like me with horrible vision (cataracts cover my entire Iris), I need a scope that is going to give me a lot of eye relief so I can stay comfortable for longer. With a 3.7″ eye relief, I can look through the scope without having to focus as hard on the reticle.  Having an eye relief above 3″ will ensure you don’t take a scope to the eye-socket after a shot. In Virginia, the density of the forests don’t really allow us to take crazy long shots like many hunters out west can take, so we don’t need scopes more than a 6-18x. No one in Virginia is taking shots more than 700 yards (regularly) in Virginia because there is very little open space and the 18x magnification gets blurry at the max setting.

VORTEX RAZOR HD LH 1.5-8X 32MM G4 BDC RIFLESCOPE

This scope is incredibly light and has an even better eye relief than the Crossfire II that I use, but doesn’t have as much magnification. This is the point of understanding your desired hunting location, because most hunters won’t need more than an 8-power magnification. As I’ve mentioned above, the quality of glass is more important than the magnification because if the sight picture is blurry, it’s not going to matter if it can zoom in further. The Vortex Razor HD LH has an incredible high-definition sight picture with an anti-reflective lens. The Vortex is completely fog proof and waterproof due to the O-ring seals that prevent everything from dust to water getting inside the lens.

Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x 50mm Riflescope

Anytime you buy a Leupold scope, you know you’re going to get the best possible quality and a lifetime warranty for product defects. My favorite characteristic for my VX-3i is how clear and precise my picture is during low light. As every hunter on earth knows, the “Golden hour” is our best chance to get an animal and you don’t want a scope that is going to give an obstructed view under low light conditions. I’ve shot more deer within the last 30 minutes of daylight with this scope than any other scope I’ve had because I know my picture is as clear as glacial water in the north pole. I would only shoot this at moderate ranges (about 700 yards), but I know better hunters that have used this scope at 1,00 yards in low light.

Bushnell Engage Riflescope

The Bushnell Engage riflescope is meant for long-range shooting out to 1,000 yards with the 24-power magnification setting. The EXO Barrier Protection gives this scope waterproofing and repels dirt and oil from your gun. The lens is multi-coated to prevent glare and to provide a very clear sight picture, even as you zoom to 24x magnification. The Deploy MOA reticle is designed to be used universally with higher or lower caliber rifles with its think reticle and MOA hash marks for windage and elevation. For the price, this scope is an incredible buy that will give you years of reliable use. I would recommend this scope be used in the higher elevations of the mountains as you look over vat open valleys and hilltops.

Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x 56 APLR5 IR MOA

I chose the Athlon Ares ETR riflescope because this is by far the best scope of all the ones you read above. This scope is at least $1,200 and provides the clearest picture of any scope I’ve ever seen. The 34mm tube diameter gives it the strength and durability to hold up against the recoil of rifles as big as a 300 Winchester Magnum without throwing off your zero. The IR reticle sight picture gives you as clear of a reticle as you’ll ever need in low light or in the middle of the day when the sun is brightest. With a 30-power magnification, you can use this scope to reach distance over 1,000 yards with ease. Just remember, as nice as this scope is, if your fundamentals and ballistics suck, you won’t be able to take advantage of this phenomenal piece of technology.
